HOUSTON (AP) — Hundreds of immigrant children and teenagers have been detained at a Border Patrol tent facility in packed conditions, with some sleeping on the floor because there aren’t enough mats, according to nonprofit lawyers who conduct oversight of immigrant detention centers.
The lawyers interviewed more than a dozen children Thursday in Donna, Texas, where the Border Patrol is holding more than 1,000 people. Some of the youths told the lawyers they had been at the facility for a week or longer, despite the agency’s three-day limit for detaining children. Many said they haven’t been allowed to phone their parents or other relatives who may be wondering where they are. Despite concerns about the coronavirus, the children are kept so closely together that they can touch the person next to them, the lawyers said. Some have to wait five days or more to shower, and there isn’t always soap available, just shampoo, according to the lawyers.
The girl’s parents live in Maryland. NASA’s Curiosity rover takes Mars selfie. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) released a stunning "selfie" taken by the Curiosity Mars rover on Tuesday.
In a tweet, the Curiosity team explained the image was captured near the impressive rock formation named "Mont Mercou" after a mountain in France's southern region. "Wish you were here! This selfie was taken in front of 'Mont Mercou,' a rock formation that’s 20ft (6m) tall," JPL posted, "It's made up of 60 images from my MAHLI camera and 11 images from my Mastcam. Look close enough to spot a new drill hole – my 30th sample to date. " The selfie, taken earlier in the month, was posted alongside an additional pair of three-dimensional and panoramic shots of the Martian landscape. In a caption accompanying the image, JPL explained that Curiosity had stitched together different images to create the selfie in front of the 20-foot-tall rock outcrop. Poll: 72% of Americans Call Illegal Immigration 'Direct Threat' To U.S. A large majority of American adults say illegal immigration poses a “direct threat” to the United States, an AP-NORC poll released Monday shows. The poll finds that 72 percent of Americans are concerned about illegal immigration’s direct threat to the U.S. — including 45 percent who say they are “extremely” concerned and 27 percent who say they are “moderately concerned.” Only 26 percent of Americans said they are not concerned about the threat of illegal immigration to the U.S. The poll shows that a plurality of Republicans, 41 percent, somewhat or strongly oppose giving amnesty to illegal aliens who arrived in the U.S. as children.
Just 33 percent of Republicans said they strongly or somewhat favor an amnesty for this group of the illegal alien population. That data point comes as the Democrat-controlled House passed two amnesty bills, with the support of a handful of House Republicans, that would push millions of illegal aliens into the U.S. workforce to take American jobs.
