Chapel on the Vincenz Priessnitz vault, Gräfenberg Hill, Jeseník Vincenz Priessnitz , also written Prießnitz (sometimes in German Vinzenz , in English Vincent , in Czech Vincenc ; October 4, 1799 - November 28, 1851) was a peasant farmer in Gräfenberg, Austrian Silesia , who is generally considered the founder of modern hydrotherapy , which is used in alternative and orthodox medicine. Priessnitz stressed remedies such as suitable food , air, exercise , rest and water, over conventional medicine. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] He is thus also credited with laying the foundations of what became known as Nature Cure , [ 4 ] although it has been noted that his main focus was on hydrotherapeutic techniques. Thomas Rawlinson was an 18th century English industrialist who is widely reputed, though not without controversy, to have been the inventor of the modern kilt . Very little is easily found about Thomas Rawlinson himself, even his vital dates (birth and death). He is described in nearly all accounts as being an Englishman and a Quaker who went to the Highlands in the aftermath of the suppression of the 1715 Jacobite uprising in order to establish an iron works. In a listing of "Baptisms at the Church of St. Laurence in the Parish of Chorley in the County of Lancashire, 1709-1768": [1] , a Thomas Rawlinson, likely the subject of this article, is listed as the father of 3 infants baptized there between the years 1718 and 1724. His occupation is listed as "bricklayer".
