Webdesign succes. Putting the "new" in "new media literacies": a helpful visual aid. Here's a Prezi project I've been working on to visualize some key features of what Kress, Lankshear & Knobel, Scribner & Cole, and others find salient in emerging new media literacy practices. This visualization emphasizes Lankshear & Knobel's characterization of two distinct approaches to the "new" in "new media literacy. " As they explain, the use of 'new' in the paradigmatic sense is a sociocultural approach to literacy practices: the New Literacy Studies comprise a new paradigm for looking at literacy as opposed to the paradigm that already existed that was based on psychology. The use of 'new' here parallels that which is involved in names for initiatives or movements such as the New School of Social Research, the New Science, the New Criticism (and New Critics) and so on.

Okay, that's the paradigmatic sense of 'new.' Gunther Kress, in "Literacy and Multimodality," emphasizes design, perhaps above all else. Design does not ask, 'what was done before, how, for whom, with what? ' HTML5 and The Future of the Web | How-To. Whatever side of the debate you’re on, you’ve most likely heard all the blogging chatter surrounding the “new hotness” that is HTML5. It’s everywhere, it’s coming, and you want to know everything you can before it’s old news. Things like jQuery plugins, formatting techniques, and design trends change very quickly throughout the Web community. And for the most part we’ve all accepted that some of the things we learn today can be obsolete tomorrow, but that’s the nature of our industry. When looking for some stability, we can usually turn to the code itself as it tends to stay unchanged for a long time (relatively speaking). In this article, I’m hoping to give you some tips and insight into HTML5 to help ease the inevitable pain that comes with transitioning to a slightly different syntax. Welcome to HTML5. The DOCTYPE. Second Life objects to become HTTP-aware - Massively.

While Second Life users wait with 'bated breath for the SLS 1.27 deployment that will sort out a large number of crippling group communications failures, there's an extra bonus lurking in the code. SLS1.27 will be adding an HTTP-in feature which will allow HTTP requests to be sent to Second Life objects. At present, Second Life objects can only 'dial out' to external Web-servers and services, but with few practical methods of communicating that external data and resources have changed, many object creators have had to settle for frequent polling of Web-services for data. The HTTP-in method, will allow external services to push data to in-world objects and receive simple responses, saving significant quantities of bandwidth and server resources. That, right there, stands to revolutionize a lot of scripted systems.

Documentation for the new communications subsystem is available, and the feature can already be trialled live on Aditi, the beta/preview grid. Flash Journalism. HTML 5 Cheat Sheet (PDF) | Freebies. Beyond the API: Why Companies Should Have a Presence on All Major Platforms - ReadWriteWeb. Much has been written lately about the rise of the API. Offering a programming interface to an online service is now standard practice amongst this generation of web companies.

Through APIs, we get to enjoy a range of innovative Twitter clients, wide availability of maps and location information, custom search engines, and more. However, delivering superior user experience on major platforms should be as much of a priority as opening up via an API. Just because an API enables companies to create a third party ecosystem around their service, it doesn't mean that the company itself shouldn't be an active player in it.

Web sites are only one kind of presence that companies can have today. User Experience is King User interface innovation is a major part of the ongoing web revolution. The innovations have set the bar for UI high. Today the user experience is not just a set of widgets or a website design. This is increasingly true about any modern web application. BERKELEY, CALIF. — The week-long training at UC Berkeley in multimedia has now moved to a new phase.

After getting basic background on audio, video and photographic equipment, we went out into the field on our group’s assignment. My group, Team Gecko, went to visit Professor Robert Full to learn about the work he’s done in biomechanics. Full’s lab discovered the properties of gecko’s feet that allow the animals to stick onto slick surfaces without use of suction or adhesive.

He then mimicked that stickiness in robots that could climb up walls. So the seven of us descended into Full’s office, a press gaggle with a high-end videocamera, two audio recorders, a digital SLR and point-and-shoot camera, and lots of microphones. Often, Full would ask us what we wanted to do next, and we had to struggle to figure it out. Gecko press gaggle Sometimes, the journalist scrum was as entertaining as Full’s spiel about mimicking nature with new inventions. Learning Basic Flash Laura Bischoff 1. 2. 3. 4. Search engine optimization tips. With search engines ranking as a top traffic driver for many blogs and content sites, optimizing a site for search engine exposure is an increasingly critical component of any online marketing effort. Search engine optimization, or “SEO,” means using technical and not-so-technical techniques to make sure that people searching for topics you write about will find your site. Over the next few months, I’ll be redesigning MediaShift in conjunction with adding new video and audio features.

One of my goals for the redesign is, not surprisingly, to increase traffic; and with nearly 50% of MediaShift traffic coming from Google, getting more traffic means doing more SEO. So I did some online research and contacted Aaron Wall, a young SEO expert who wrote SEO Book and consults for websites that want to improve their search optimization. Aaron Wall Another caveat: I noticed that SEO experts often recommend certain writing styles including particular ways of writing headlines and captions. 1. 2. 3. Worries about the evolution of html. Has HTML lost its way Eric posted to xml-dev - his view of HTML futures. Based on his blog entry which collates some solid detail on his concerns.

He's basically agreeing with Norms issues and discussing others, seeming mostly concerned with the move from documents to applications. He (rightly IMHO) comments ...over specifying how to use a document is a risk to block creativity and increase the coupling between applications. Which I interpret as the temptation that any WG has to overstep the mark and reach beyond what is in the interest of users. The approach looked so obvious that W3C has probably neglected to check that the community was still following its works. My view on HTML usage goes back to the simplicity of HTML 1.0 on a netscape browser. Migrating a site from HTML to XHTML involves an additional work which is only compensated by the joy of displaying a “W3C XHTML 1.x compliant” logo!

Yippee. Eric goes on to point out some of the weaknesses he sees in the opposing camps. Html wikibook. Webdesign site. Html5 en xhtml. Most people use HTML V4 and XHTML V1 to create Web pages. Relatively few HTML enthusiasts understand the concepts of semantic HTML, validating HTML structures, and improving documents for accessibility. A high-quality HTML document is a result of many trade-offs, design choices, and discussions. Despite all criticism, no alternative even nearly as universal as HTML exists. Most users settle for the standard as it is, even if it will be the final version ever produced.

Like any other standard, however, HTML will have successors. The first proposal for a new HTML version came from a work group initiated by the W3C. Some prominent HTML specialists outside the W3C—browser vendors, Web developers, authors, and other stakeholders—disagreed with the direction of XHTML V2. After a few years, the working draft is a clear description of an alternative direction for HTML.

Those are the dry facts leading to the current situation. A brief history of XHTML The philosophy behind XHTML V2. Code validator. What does it mean.
