Cisco’s Approach to Second Life. Posted on 09 July 2008. I recently watched John Chambers press conference in Second Life at Cisco’s annual Cisco Live developers conference and wanted to offer some thoughts on the event. Earlier in the year I made a few predictions for how I felt the so-called world of ‘social media’ was going to unfold through ’08. Regarding Second Life I wrote, Although there is a decent chance that Second Life will simply die and go away, I am going to defy popular logic and say that it will actually crawl out of the trough of disillusionment as the technology gets better, integration with the regular Web increases, and a more realist perspective on its potential facilitates more niche, targeted applications. I feel that Cisco’s virtual press conference was a great application of Second Life for the following reasons: 1. Cisco’s mantra, “The Human Network,” basically expresses the underlying strategic vision for Cisco moving forward. 2. 3. 4.

Yesterday I had the pleasure to interview Jeanette Gibson, Director of New Media Communications at Cisco about Social Media in general and Cisco’s activities and future plans in that field.

The interview turned out to be very interesting as Cisco seems to be quite far ahead compared to many big companies in this field. I was surprised to hear that they are doing that much already in either blogs or virtual worlds. Other companies should be able to learn a lot from them. The most important part is actually what she says in the end: The landscape has changed and companies must adapt as far as social media is concerned. Around 20 people from different kind of companies, service providers and universities participated to this FITCE.be afternoon session at the premises of Cisco Systems in Diegem. Goal of the event was to cover the concepts and theory behind the upcoming next-generation of immersive virtual meeting rooms, also called Telepresence solutions. These solutions offer an immersive meeting experience to people remotely located, delivering a feeling of having the meeting virtually together, face to face, in the same room. Ir. We had two very interesting lectures: A first lecture “Concepts and Theory behind Immersive Environments”, given by Christof Van Nimwegen, Senior Researcher at the Center For Usability Research (CUO) of the IBBT / Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, covered the theoretical background behind immersive solutions.
