AI players habitually ignore diplomatic invitations, leaving you unsure as to whether or not your deal was insulting or just never got delivered. Some options are simply broken and the computer will occasionally renegotiate the terms for you, changing the technologies you're exchanging for others that weren't ever on the table. The AI will also send you threatening messages warning you that it will soon attack your colonies in a sector you haven't even discovered yet. In fact, the AI in general isn't very impressive. The real time tactical battles add a bit of excitement to the game.
With the notable exception of Sword of the Stars, Space Empires V is the best looking game of its kind. Interface elements and menu screens are slick and polished and manage to convey a bit of character as well in the planetary views and racial portraits. The only downside to the graphics are the space battles. The Verdict Okay.
