What's New in Folder Redirection and User Profiles. The Windows® operating system provides two technologies to provide users with a consistent user experience, regardless of where the user is logged on. These technologies are Folder Redirection and user profiles. This document discusses the improvements to these technologies and how to customize default user profiles. Folder Redirection Windows 7 improves first-time Folder Redirection performance by optimizing the behavior between Folder Redirection and Offline Files.

This reduces logon time over slow network connections, because the operating system synchronizes redirected folder data in the background. User profiles Windows 7 enables administrators to configure background uploading of roaming user profile registry data to a server while the user remains logged on to the computer. Windows 7 also changes the how administrators customize default user profiles. Folder Redirection improvements in Windows 7 Windows 7 optimizes the first-time logon process with Folder Redirection. Appendix A. Remote Desktop to Windows 2003 Server SP2 when Domain Controller is unavailable. I know this is a Win2008 forum, but I found a problem with Windows Server 2003 SP2 which might still be in Win2008, and I wanted others to avoid the same problem.

The problem: domain-member Windows Server 2003 SP2 machines prevent cilents from connecting via Remote Desktop unless the server can contact the domain-- even if the server has cached credentials available for the domain account the client is trying to use. This domain-disconnected case is probably common in Home Office scenarios, where machines occasionally connect to the domain (via RAS) but generally log in via cached credentials. Windows XP doesn't have the same problem, nor did (I'm nearly certain) Windows Server RTM. Somewhere along the way of patches and service packs, I believe my server lost the ability to use cached domain credentials for authenticating a Remote Desktop session.

On the server's event log, I get two errors: one in the Application Log and one in the System Log. Visual Studio with Roaming Profiles. Visual Studio with Roaming Profiles 27 August 2009 (4 years ago) I have been having a problem with Visual Studio constantly reconfiguring itself on startup. Quite often, when launching the environment, I get this message... "Microsoft Visual Studio is configuring the environment for first time use. True to its word, the message hangs around for a while before letting me get on with my work. My company's network is configured to use roaming profiles. The downside is that some applications, Visual Studio included, will also end up storing machine specific information in a shared location.

But - thankfully - there is a way to avoid this... Launch Visual Studio and select Tools > Options from the menu. Now I can start Visual Studio from any of my machines without having to wait for a few minutes first! Comments Leave a Comment. Creating a persistent scratch location for ESXi. ThinLaunch is available as an MSI package, meaning it’s very easy to deploy via Group Policy. I can see the need for this package and I can even see some large enterprise customers who’d want a packaged application to handle the conversion of legacy desktops. Sorry, ThinLaunch, but you get three out of ten pokers — there’s just nothing hot there.

Reset Roaming Profile and Folder Redirection Permissions | MCB Systems. Mark Berry October 6, 2010 One of the biggest challenges of working with roaming profiles and folder redirection is setting permissions on the shared objects. I recently migrated a Server 2003 domain controller to Server 2008 R2. In spite of following the Microsoft migration guide, Migrate Server Roles to Windows Server 2008 R2, users were unable to access their roaming data after the migration. What should the permissions be, and how do I fix them? First I should mention that I consider roaming profiles and folder redirection to be two sides of the same coin. I set up folder redirection to reduce logon delay when using roaming profiles (as recommended here). So I want to check/reset permissions on both. Tracking Down Correct Permissions The article Using Folder Redirection talks about new features in Server 2008 R2 but does not address security.

If you compare the permissions, you’ll see that they are almost identical. Understanding Active Directory Functional Levels. Functional levels determine the available Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) domain or forest capabilities. They also determine which Windows Server operating systems you can run on domain controllers in the domain or forest. However, functional levels do not affect which operating systems you can run on workstations and member servers that are joined to the domain or forest.

When you deploy AD DS, set the domain and forest functional levels to the highest value that your environment can support. This way, you can use as many AD DS features as possible. For example, if you are sure that you will never add domain controllers that run Windows Server 2003 to the domain or forest, select the Windows Server 2008 functional level during the deployment process. However, if you might retain or add domain controllers that run Windows Server 2003, select the Windows Server 2003 functional level. The following table shows the features that are available at each domain functional level. Active Directory Recycle Bin in Windows Server 2008 R2 Step-by-Step Guide [R2] Updated: January 6, 2009 Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2 This guide provides step-by-step instructions and background information for enabling and using the Active Directory® Recycle Bin feature in the Windows Server® 2008 R2 operating system.

Active Directory Recycle Bin helps minimize directory service downtime by enhancing your ability to preserve and restore accidentally deleted Active Directory objects without restoring Active Directory data from backups, restarting Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), or rebooting domain controllers. When you enable Active Directory Recycle Bin, all link-valued and non-link-valued attributes of the deleted Active Directory objects are preserved and the objects are restored in their entirety to the same consistent logical state that they were in immediately before deletion.

Active Directory Recycle Bin is functional for both AD DS and Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) environments. Modis. Upgrade from Windows 2000/2003 to 2008/2008 R2 Domain Controllers « Awinish's Blog… One question which I often come across is how to upgrade your domain from windows 2003 to windows 2008 or 2008 R2.

Mostly organizations are running their domain controller on windows 2003 x86(32bit), windows 2008 R2 is available only in x64(64bit) & initially when we want to upgrade their domain from windows 2000 to 2003 they use ADPREP.EXE as 99% organization has their DC on 32bit system. Now, you too decided to upgrade your domain controller to windows 2008 R2 which is only available in x64bit, & while looking for ADPREP.EXE, you found ADPREP32.EXE as well as ADPREP.EXE both is available in windows 2008 R2 media, now you are confused which one to be used on windows 2003 which is 32bit to prepare schema so you can introduce x64 bit (2008 or 2008 R2) domain controller. Well, its nothing wrong but you chose the wrong version of ADPREP, MS has released two version of ADPREP32.EXE which has to run on 32bit OS DC & ADPREP.EXE has to run on 64 bit DC.

Summary In this article, I showed you how to do an in-place upgrade for Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller to Windows Server 2008. The steps are easy and straightforward, just make sure while reading the compatibility report, if any of the hardware/software installed on your Server are compatible with Windows Server 2008. Back to top. Different Policies, Same Domain. A limitation of previous versions of Windows Server that often made Active Directory (AD) design complex was the inability to assign password policies to different groups of users without creating a separate domain for each group. Consider a situation where the Accounts Department requires a more complex password policy than the rest of the company. The expense of provisioning an additional domain can be prohibitive, especially for small organizations.

It may make sense, or even be necessary for compliance or political reasons, to enforce a stronger password or lockout policy for groups of users who have access to sensitive information on the network. Requiring a complex password that has to be changed every two weeks may enrage Mary the receptionist but be a requirement for Bob in Human Resources.

In Windows Server 2008, it’s possible to implement different password and account lockout policies in the same domain by configuring a Fine-Grained Password Policy. Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3.
