[Meego-handset] Naming of Community Edition - community discussion. From MeeGo to Tizen, Debian, ...? The MeeGo community is frustrated with the news of the MeeGo brand being abandoned. Some are understandably angry or otherwise not happy about how Linux Foundation, Intel handled the Tizen announcement and community in general - or more like how they didn't handle it at all. Last week Openmind 2011 happened to be arranged in Tampere on the very same day as Tizen announcement came alive. It was good in the way that it lead to the fact that Nomovok's CEO Pasi Nieminen was able to initiate the "Reigniting MeeGo" session not just by talking vague things about future, but actually about the process which led to Tizen and the unfortunately brief initial PR about it.
Pasi is intense on emphasizing the quality and role of Qt in Tizen as well, even though officially Tizen is all about HTML5 and apparently from Samsung's part at least EFL is provided as a native toolkit. Two more Handset manufacturers are to join MeeGo working on the Handset form factor. Panasonic and Huawei are to be nominated to join the MeeGo Handset Working Group at a scheduled TSG (Technical Steering Group) Meeting.
If approved (and I can’t see any reason for them not getting approved) they will join China Mobile, Intel, LGE, Nokia and ZTE (who were announced last week). Many (including me) see Huawei coming onboard as a major boost to the MeeGo Handset Operating System and makes the bitter pill of Nokia taking a back step from MeeGo an easier Pill to swallow. He pushed the first version of Qt 5 for Android to a WIP branch on January 4th, and recently we integrated into the “dev” branch, meaning that it will become part of Qt 5.1 when it is released. MeeGo QA Reports. MeeGo 1.1 Caught Running On The HTC HD2 – Mibz.com. The HTC HD2 is the most powerful Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone ever released and sadly Microsoft has denied Windows Phone 7 support for this device. Well, some clever guys managed to port it to the HTC HD2 alongside other operating systems like Android. The last OS to be ported to the HTC HD2 is MeeGo 1.1 OS. Although this cannot be considered a breakthrough, it’s nice to know that hackers are still having fun… uhm, well, hacking. MeeGo 1.1 is not as functional as other OSs, but the software’s UI is definitely better than what WinMo 6.5 has to offer, and Nokia, like Microsoft, has begun to understand the importance of a nice UI.
If Apple revolutionized the UI world with iOS, now it’s WP7′d turn to do it because, sadly, WebOS failed to do because of Palm’s mistakes. This is annual summit which is held in different locations around Finland. Tampere will host the first Regional Meego Summit in the world. Although the first Summit is at Tampere, this is a joined effort. Tampere and Helsinki local networks have joined forces and other local networks are also welcome to participate!
