EOS370 Earthquake Preparedness Handout. Backplot: In the fall of 2000, I took a course -- Earth and Ocean Sciences 370 -- on plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanos, and other natural hazards. Partway through the course, my instructor made mention of his desire to have someone come into the class to speak on the subject of earthquake preparedness, and I.. well, I didn't exactly volunteer, but the end result went something like that anyway, despite my best intentions. I created this handout to act as a resource for the students in the course; I discovered I had a lot more to say on the subject than could fit in a bunch of slides or a one-page handout. Subsequently, this document became required reading for both an assignment and the final exam. Though the course is over, I'm keeping it around on the Web because I think it's a useful resource to people trying to do future presentations of the sort (ah, ego), and because I have an aversion to breaking links.
