Just for fun, I’ll post the covers of my earlier story collections, along with the Asimov’s SF magazine covers that feature images of my stories—three of the Asimov’s covers are of tales I co-authored with the redoubtable Bruce Sterling, and one shows a cover of a surfing tale I wrote with Marc Laidlaw.

Little Brother » About this book/FAQ

Giving away ebooks gives me artistic, moral and commercial satisfaction. The commercial question is the one that comes up most often: how can you give away free ebooks and still make money? For me -- for pretty much every writer -- the big problem isn't piracy, it's obscurity (thanks to Tim O'Reilly for this great aphorism).

Of all the people who failed to buy this book today, the majority did so because they never heard of it, not because someone gave them a free copy. Mega-hit best-sellers in science fiction sell half a million copies -- in a world where 175,000 attend the San Diego Comic Con alone, you've got to figure that most of the people who "like science fiction" (and related geeky stuff like comics, games, Linux, and so on) just don't really buy books. Ebooks are verbs, not nouns. What's more, I don't see ebooks as substitute for paper books for most people. So ebooks sell print books. Now, onto the artistic case. Jack Reacher. Development and author's commentary[edit] Development[edit] Critics have perceived other influences in Jack Reacher's creation.

Jack Reacher

Bob Cornwell quotes Lee Child's reply in another interview as having created Reacher "as an antidote, to all the depressed and miserable alcoholics that increasingly peopled the genre".[2][3] Similarly, editor Otto Penzler published an essay by Child explaining that Jack Reacher was created deliberately in contrast to the prevailing trends in crime fiction. It was almost 400 years old when the Domesday Book was compiled, 500 years old when Magna Carta was witnessed, and over 700 years old when Gutenberg invented movable type. It was written and decorated at the end of the 7th century by the monk Eadfrith, who became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 698 and died in 721. Its original leather binding, long since lost, was made by Ethelwald, who succeeded Eadfrith as bishop, and was decorated with jewels and precious metals later in the 8th century by Billfrith the Anchorite.

Craig Thompson's new graphic novel Habibi is an enormous and genre-busting graphic novel that blends Islamic mysticism, slave/liberation narratives and post-apocalyptic science fiction, creating a story that is erotic, grotesque, and profoundly moving.

Habibi is set in an atemporal Middle Eastern country that seems at times to be caught in classical times, but whose landscape is dotted with derelict jeeps, poisoned water awash in rotting consumer goods and other elements from out of time. Craig Thompson—The Devil Made Me Draw It. MJ: So this book is coming out the day before your 36th birthday.

That's quite a present! CT: Yeah, it is. You've read the book, so you know about all the numerological concerns. And I like the numerology there, since 36 is nine, and the book is kind of based on that nine-panel grid. MJ: Yeah, I loved how you organize the book. CT: Not at all. MJ: How long did it actually take, from idea to completion?

CT: It was six years solid of work. MJ: Have your other books sold well enough that you could focus on this, or did you have to freelance on the side? CT: Blankets has sold pretty well. MJ: The first time I read it, I was just sort of into the story. Volume 1.
