Young's Literal Translation of the Bible

Published in 1862, it is an exacting literal translation from the original Hebrew and Greek texts. Young even used the present tense extensively where most English translations use the past, because that conforms to the original Hebrew (see, e.g. the first few verses of Genesis). This text is in the public domain in the US because it was published prior to 1923. It was originally best known by its full name, but soon came to have other names, such as the American Revised Version, the American Standard Revision, the American Standard Revised Bible, and the American Standard Edition. By the time its copyright was renewed in 1929, it had finally come to be known by its present name, the American Standard Version. Because of its prominence in seminaries, however, it was sometimes simply called the "Standard Bible". Weymouth New Testament. World English Bible. King James Version. Sacred Texts Bible This is the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, traditionally the principal English translation.

King James Version

The KJV is considered one of the masterpieces of early modern English literature, although most modern readers find the language a bit dated and occasionally opaque. There have been numerous successive English translations, many of which have borrowed heavily from the KJV. One thing to note about the names of the books in the KJV, particularly if you are linking to the files here: the KJV books called 1, 2, 3 and 4 Kings are called Samuel 1 and 2, and Kings 1 and 2 respectively in other versions and translations. However, the abbreviations used at this site are sa1, sa2, ki1 and ki2 respectively across all of the Bible etexts. Darby Bible. The Woman's Bible. Sacred Texts Women Bible The Woman's Bible, written by famous 19th Century feminist Elizabeth Cady Stanton and a "Revising Committee", is one of the first attempts by women to evaluate the Judeo-Christian legacy and its impact on women through history.

The Woman's Bible

Stanton concluded that 'the Bible in its teachings degrades Women from Genesis to Revelation'. However she and the other contributors found much to admire in the Bible, particularly some of the Old Testament women. While many of her views are still controversial, time and advances in womens' rights have lessened some of the shock value of this book. Stanton doesn't go as far as some modern feminist theologians and proclaim 'God is a woman', but there are several contributions which discuss the gender of the 'Elohim' and the female aspects of the Kabbalah.

The book is very readable and entertaining, despite occasional references to now-moot 19th Century political issues (such as temperance and bimetallism). American Standard Version. The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth (the Jefferson Bible)

The text here focuses on the attributed words of Jesus: chiefly the Sermon on the Mount and the parables. Jefferson highlights the ideas of the Gospels, rather than miracles and wonder stories. For instance, Jefferson ends the story with Jesus' burial: there is no resurrection in this tale, and no post-death interaction with the disciples. This edition contains a very short section with some other writings of Jefferson on religion. Blue Letter Bible. The People's New Testament. Douay-Rheims Bible. Webster's Bible.
