You are such an inspiration to me. What are your best tips/tools for a beginner DIYer (upcycling furniture, making jewelry, etc.) that is sort of scared and doesn’t really know where to start!? Keep on creating! You and your team are amazing!” My Answer: Hi Chel! Per your wonderful question, I compiled some of my essentials to create a DIY starter kit. In my kit: Adhesives. Sharpie tie dye. This is a great project for kids, or adults. I first saw the idea on the blog found here. All you need are some Sharpies, rubbing alcohol and something to drip it from (I had a syringe), and a t-shirt, or other clothing.

I put a piece of cardboard in my tank top to prevent bleeding. Step 1: Use the Sharpies to make marks on your t-shirt. Step 2: Drip some drops of rubbing alcohol. I did about 4-8 drops. Watch your design expand Step 3: Dry your t-shirt completely before washing. After I washed it the colors faded, but I still like the look: TIP: After drying the shirt with a hair dryer, allow it to set for 24 hours before washing. Swiss Army Key Ring. Introducing the Ombre Umbrella (AKA the “Ombrella”) Rain season is upon us and, though we’re excited for what April showers will most certainly bring, it can be a drag to carry the same old black umbrella to and from work every day. Add a pop of color to those rainy days with our easy-to-make DIY Ombre Umbrella… AKA the Ombrella! Materials: - Montana Black spray paint (blue, purple, pink) - Montana Gold Universal Plastic Primer - clear bubble umbrella - painter’s tape We used neon spray paint because we can’t get enough of neon! Ask your hardware store if they have the Montana Black brand but, if they don’t, pretty much any spray paint should work.

Cover your umbrella in primer. We decided on an ombre pattern starting with blue at the bottom of the umbrella, then to purple and finally pink. Continue up with purple, then pink. Now it’s time to peel off that tape. Hold your umbrella up to the sky. Of course, when we started this project it was raining but, by the time we took final photos, the sun was out!

Craft Foam Armor Tutorial. I was searching for a cheap, light, but nice-looking material to make armor out of, and I discovered one - craft foam! This tutorial is designed to show what you can create using only materials that are widely available at general craft stores, with no need for specialty shops or internet orders. I specifically used it for Helm's Deep elf armor, but it could be used for almost any armor that you can break down into fairly flat pieces. The method listed below is what I've come up with, but there really is no one right way to use craft foam; check the end of the tutorial for links to other foam armor sites. For an example of a finished project, here's a picture of my elven armor. Advantages: Light weight Inexpensive materials Widely available materials Easy to make Safe to wear in crowds Most steps are safe for kids to do Flexible - won't break or crack Great 'beginner' armor Disadvantages: The tools you will need are: Scissors Paintbrush Heat source - heat gun or stove burner You're done!

Small Measures: Homemade Watercolors. I share my home, and my life, with an MFA-toting husband (whose concentration was in painting and color theory), and an active, inquisitive, art-loving 2 year-old. Between the two of them and my own ongoing craft projects and homemade gift-making endeavors, suffice to say, there is a good deal of paint in our lives. Over the winter, I committed myself to organizing our craft/guest/office room. Going through a box of art supplies, I found a very old set of watercolors-as in, freshman-year-of-college-in-’94 old. I figured it was time to get a new set. Wanting to keep our art supplies as non-toxic possible, it occurred to me that I could make my own watercolors instead of buying them.

For today’s Small Measures, in celebration of the Color theme on Design Sponge this month, I’m offering you an incredibly easy and affordable recipe for creating watercolors at home. I really love this watercolor recipe, for so many reasons, but primarily for two. Homemade Watercolors What about you? Kissing clothespin cake topper. I’ve been thinking of fun, alternative caketoppers and when I saw this, I thought it’d be the perfect thing to turn bridal. They’re so quick and easy to make that you could even make a bunch of them and clip them to brown paper bags as favors for your guests. I found an oversized clothespin at the dollar store, which adds a little more drama to the cake than everyday laundry clothespins. You will need clothespins, acrylic paints, paintbrushes, pencil, (optional lace/tulle for veil) Step 1: Pencil in your tuxedo with bow tie and wedding dress. Keep it simple.

I added a pearl necklace and rosy cheeks. Step 2: Paint in your lines. Step 3: (optional) Glue gun pieces of lace or tulle to make veil. Voilà! I adore this cake photographed by John Cullen and thought it’d be the perfect thing to show off our kissing duo. Leave a Comment. How To Make Your Own Washi Tape Tutorial. There are so many great washi tape ideas out there but it isn’t always easy to cute patters. So how about a tutorial for how to make your own washi tape? I used patterned napkins and tissue paper to make it! 6K+ Since this month’s Pinspired and Rewired contest theme is washi tape and I’ve wanted to try to make my own washi tape for quite awhile now after seeing it in several different places like here at Nifty Thrifty Things. I figured there was no time like the present to try it out but this isn’t truly washi tape…its more like decorator tape since I didn’t use washi paper. Making the washi tape is very basic and requires just a few supplies: Scissors Double Sided Tape Waxed Paper Tissue Paper or Napkins Cardboard Tube Several years ago the company my husband worked for was throwing away some rolls of double sided tape and he scooped them up.

Put strips of doubled sided tape on the waxed paper and then cut them out. Then, cut any excess paper off the tape. Have you tried using washi tape yet? Bleach Printing : Stamping Technique. 1. Choose an area to work in that is well ventilated. (For safety info regarding bleach, see the bottle's label.) 2. Put on your latex gloves. This will protect your skin from any splashes. I would also recommend wearing an apron or old clothes just in case there are any flying bleach molecules. 3. No doubt you’ll have heard of the term Cinemagraph since it exploded onto the Internets. Originally coined by Photographers Kevin Burg and Jamie Beck, a cinemagraph is a clever revival of the classic animated GIF. It combines features of video and photography to create a the illusion of a still image but with cool motion effects. Let’s take a look at how to create your own animated GIF cinemagraph by playing around with Photoshop’s animation tools. Some of the best cinemagraph examples can be found on the creators’ own website. As the popularity of the cinemagraph grew we began to see mobile apps such as Cinemagram emerge, which allows the easy creation of amateur cinemagraphs using the device’s built in camera. Cinemagraphs require some kind of motion, so while the final image looks much more similar to a photograph than a video, we need to begin with actual video footage.

Use a tripod. Alternatively you could always play around with existing stock video footage. Download this file. Bag-Lace Clutch Clip Art - Martha Stewart Sewing Projects. Halloween Pompoms - Mr Printables Blog. There should be pompoms for every occasion and so here are a few for Halloween! Soft ghost pompoms make great Halloween toys for tiny hands. I’ve also found out that pompoms are perfect for making hideous monsters that bigger kids will have so much fun with. I ended up making quite a few different ones (they are great to make in your coffee break!) So I’m afraid this has become a long post. There are a few designs to choose from – ghosts, skulls, eye balls and some other Halloween characters. The easiest ones are eye balls and ghosts and they are really fun to play with after you make them, so I hope you have a go!

DIY Pineapple Dress + Free Printable Pineapples.

Holy moly, it’s a pineapple dress! All summer I’ve been wanting to make a pineapple dress. I thought about stamping it, stenciling it, but then I got those pineapple printables from Kate in my inbox and I knew they had to make the dress of my dreams come to life. I had actually never used iron-on transfer paper and I was quite nervous with how it would turned out but I am pretty darn excited about the results! I took a simple little dress and jazzed it up with my favorite motif of 2013 and it is oh so summer party perfect! Here’s how to make your own… FYI I’m never taking this dress off… …no, really. Cotton or Cotton/Poly Dress (I bought this one from Forever 21 and it was perfect!)

**FYI The printable looks slightly different than the one above as I modified it after I saw how many pineapples the dress took. Print out your pineapple printables onto your iron-on transfer paper following the paper’s directions. Iron over your pineapple according to the paper’s directions. Voila! Pom Pom Fruit - Mr Printables Blog. It’s been quiet here recently as we’re still mostly working on getting our fruity Apple & Pear Houses ready over at Rock & Pebble, but I see them all coming together nicely and they might even be ready to ship in less than a couple of weeks now. To celebrate, we’re going all tutti frutti this week! Ok, skip the promo (blush!)

And now on to the pompoms. If you’re feeling a bit deficient in vitamin C after a long winter like us, this is where we’ll top up our extra fruit portions! They make great play foods that are soft to hold and colorful to the eye. Some designs are very easy to make, so hope you have a go! Out of these fruit pompoms, I’ve managed step-by-step tutorial pics for the strawberry, kiwi, lemon and watermelon with some diagrams and trimming tips. The strawberry pompom is probably the easiest one so you can make a few in no time and kids will love a handful of them.
