The smart thermostat in your bedroom, sensing your motion, turns on the hot water and reports your movements to a central database. News updates ping your phone, with your daily decision whether to click on them or not carefully monitored, and parameters adjusted accordingly. How far and where your morning run takes you, the conditions of your commute, the contents of your text messages, the words you speak in your own home and your actions beneath all-seeing cameras, the contents of your shopping basket, your impulse purchases, your speculative searches and choices of dates and mates – all recorded, rendered as data, processed, analysed, bought, bundled and resold like sub-prime mortgages. Schadenfreude: The Joy of Another’s Misfortune by Tiffany Watt Smith. Schadenfreude delight is something we mention every now and then on Professional Moron.

It’s when you take subtle joy in the mishaps of others – such as if you see some pompous-looking businessman fall over in the street. You’ll feel smug and superior about it for an instant. Why is this? The Lost Words: An Illustrated Dictionary of Poetic Spells Reclaiming the Language of Nature. “Words belong to each other,” Virginia Woolf’s melodious voice unspools in the only surviving recording of her speech — a 1937 love letter to language.

“In each word, all words,” the French philosopher Maurice Blanchot writes a generation later as he considers the dual power of language to conceal and to reveal. Britain has lost the Falklands war, Margaret Thatcher battles Tony Benn for power and Alan Turing achieves a breakthrough in artificial intelligence. In a world not quite like this one, two lovers will be tested beyond their understanding. A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. A Confedarcy of Dunces hit the shelves in 1980. Whilst that may sound normal enough, the story behind the publication of this work is tragic. Yet that goes against the humourousness nature of the work, with lumanaries such as Billy Connolly sighting it as his favourite comedy book.

John Kennedy Toole (1937-1969) wrote it in 1963, but after failing to get it published he suffered a depressive fit and committed suicide. Book of da Week: The First Circle by Alexandr Solzhenitsyn. It’s over a decade since Russian great Alexandr Solzhenitsyn passed away aged 89. In one heck of an action-packed, often traumatic, life the novelist and historian won the Nobel Prize in Literature (1970) for landmark titles such as Cancer Ward and A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.

But The First Circle (1968), an epic in the way only Russian authors know how, is arguably his finest work. Our Harvill edition came out in 1996, but in 2009 a more complete translation made it out to the UK and beyond. So if you dare take on this novel, then you may want to pick up the most recent publication.

The Voyage of the Beagle. The Voyage of the Beagle is the title most commonly given to the book written by Charles Darwin and published in 1839 as his Journal and Remarks, bringing him considerable fame and respect. This was the third volume of The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle, the other volumes of which were written or edited by the commanders of the ships. Journal and Remarks covers Darwin's part in the second survey expedition of the ship HMS Beagle.

The Loveliest Children’s Books of 2018. Once a year, every year, I reread The Little Prince and manage to find in it new layers of loveliness and wisdom each time, always seemingly written to allay whatever my greatest struggle at that moment is. It is a special book, yes, but it is not singular in being a testament to something I have long believed: that great children’s books transcend both age and time. They are exquisite distillations of philosophies for living, addressing in the language of children — which is the language of absolute sincerity, so countercultural in our age of cynicism — the deepest, most eternal truths about what it means to live a meaningful, beautiful, inspired, noble life.

Although written with children in mind, they speak to the eternal child that each of us lives with and answers to, but often neglects — something Antoine de Saint-Exupéry knew and articulated beautifully in dedicating The Little Prince to the little boy inside his grown-up best friend. “Are you lost?” Asked Bear. Book of da Week: The Sea, The Sea by Iris Murdoch. Here we have a 1978 novel from Irish-born writer Iris Murduch (1919-1999).
