| Robert Kuttner and Michael Hudson on the Obama Administration's $789 Billion Economic Stimulus Package and $2.5 Trillion Bank Recovery Plans. This is a rush transcript. Copy may not be in its final form. JUAN GONZALEZ: Both the House and Senate are set to vote today on the $789 billion economic stimulus package. The vote follows weeks of political wrangling that culminated in compromise legislation struck on Wednesday.
The final size of the package is less than what both the House and Senate originally passed and far smaller than what many economists say is needed. But it still marks the nation’s largest economic rescue program since Franklin Delano Roosevelt launched the New Deal. The final bill includes $507 billion in spending programs and $282 billion in tax relief. Independent Senator Joseph Lieberman hailed it as a bipartisan achievement. SEN. Most Republican lawmakers have opposed the stimulus. SEN. JUAN GONZALEZ: Gregg is Obama’s second Commerce pick to withdraw from nomination, following New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.
Meanwhile, more federal aid for the nation’s banking system is likely on the horizon. [break] What is long tail marketing? > Ryan Doom. How to Deal With This Brave New Economy - Conversation Starter - HarvardBusiness.org. By Annie McKee | 10:36 AM February 11, 2009 A friend of mine who is in a senior leadership role told me about a dream she had last night that seems to be a sign of the times. In her dream, her company asked her to go down to part-time (better than being laid off, right?). She agreed, taking one on the chin for the team. In her dream, she then took another half-time position in different industry and found herself at the bottom, in an entry level job, sharing a workspace with seven other people. She was completely lost. Dreaming and panicked, she thought, “Nothing I know from all my years of experience is relevant here. Nothing we know seems to work anymore.
Recession, depression, catastrophe, macropocalypse–whatever you call it, we are in new territory. When it gets tough, as it does almost every single day, I try to remember: Be honest–you don’t have all the answers. But whatever “they” do, we have to do something too. Funny Prayer. I used to publish my blog posts immediately after writing them.
Now I write, save, reconsider, save, rewrite, save, sleep, wake…oh, and then publish. The more time I build in before publishing a post, the more visitors I get to this blog. Ask yourself these questions. 1 Do you have the space and time to reflect deeply on your post? Tip: Make notes of ideas during the week. If blogging is not your full time job, write only during the weekend. 2 Is your post easy to read or daunting to a first time reader? Tip: Try organising your posts in different ways. 3 Are all those words or even sentences necessary?
Tip: Reread your post and ask whether you can cut out a word or whole sentences. 4 What combination of typography makes it easier to read? Tip: Even with a basic blog platform like this I can use bold, normal or italic, bullet points or numbers, quotations and pictures. 5 What will the post actually look like when published? Tip: Click on preview. Tip: Use the spell check. Photo credit: Xurble. A List of Social Media Marketing Examples. I've been thinking about how social media works. For example, applying game mechanics to understand participation, thinking about users vs. customers, and deconstructing ego traps in PR campaigns. This analysis makes me wonder if social media marketing matters and if so, does it scale. I thought you might benefit from some of my background research on these topics. And I'd appreciate your help in curating this list by providing more details and submitting additional cases.

As citizens of a border state, we as Texans know that Mexico is an important commercial and cultural partner. Texas exported more than 62 billion dollars worth of products to Mexico last year alone. Unfortunately, though, the border regions of Mexico are facing a drug-related surge in crime; in 2008, there were more than four homicides on average each and every day in the city of Juárez alone.
Transnational gang activity, organized crime drug cartels, human smuggling, the exploitation of children, and brutal acts of violence are all spilling into the United States across the Rio Grande. For far too long, the federal government has not fulfilled its obligation to secure our border. Where Washington has not met its responsibilities, Texas is picking up the slack. Since the initial implementation of these operations, Texas has seen a 52% drop in illegal alien apprehensions and a 65% reduction in border crime in key areas.

By Rosabeth Moss Kanter | 6:13 PM February 4, 2009 Managers of the last century, gave speeches, then had their assistants send snail mail letters with the text, and maybe followed up by a phone call to see if it was received.
Managers of the 21st century send an email and think they’ve taken care of everything. Message received. Action underway. Done deal. Not. In my experience, people don’t “get” the important messages leaders try to send the first time around. I also find that people don’t automatically read all of their emails or download attachments. Furthermore, even if people hear something once, they don’t necessarily remember that they did.
So use the principle of redundancy. As for speeches, make those headlines dramatic, repeat them several times, and keep the theme going in the next few speeches. I don’t think redundancy is waste; I think it provides focus. Tweet-A-Thon 2009. Courtney Crosslin. Go Freelance - The complete guide to starting Freelancing. @tweepl. 301 Moved Permanently. Undersea eruptions near Tonga. Scientists sailed out to have a closer look at the eruptions of an undersea volcano off the coast of Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean today. Tonga's head geologist, Kelepi Mafi, said there was no apparent danger to residents of Nuku'alofa and others living on the main island of Tongatapu. Officials also said it may be related to a quake with a magnitude of 4.4 which struck last March 13 around 35 kilometers from the capital at a depth of nearly 150 kilometres. (I know this is an off-day posting, but really, thought the images were worth it - 12 photos total) An undersea volcano erupts off the coast of Tonga, sending plumes of steam, ash and smoke up to 100 meters into the air, on March 18, 2009, off the coast of Nuku'Alofa, Tonga.

Last year, I covered the landmark SEC decision to recognize corporate blogs and potentially other forms of Social Media as a recognized form of meeting public disclosure requirements under Regulation FD (Fair Disclosure) – in some cases. It was a significant validation of a widely recognized medium for sharing information between publicly-traded companies and stakeholders. Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun, among many others, successfully lobbied over the years for official recognition of blogs and the SEC finally took notice. The real question is, did other public companies and their communications and Investor Relations teams take notice?
