Many philosophy students decide to attend graduate school, knowing almost nothing about the consequences of this decision, or about what the philosophy profession is actually like. 2. Whereas an undergraduate degree in philosophy can prepare you for law school and hence for enormous financial opportunities, a graduate degree in philosophy can prepare you for only one thing (besides understanding your place in the world better): being a professor of philosophy. 3. There are two kinds of philosophy departments: teaching-oriented, and research-oriented. The research positions are the ones almost everyone wants. The overwhelming majority of philosophy positions are teaching-oriented. 4.

Big SysOp. This page comprises an annotated bibliography of the work of philosopher Manuel DeLanda (1952-). DeLanda addresses a broad range of scientific and cultural concerns, and has written on topics as diverse as warfare, linguistics, economics, evolution, chaos theory, self-organizing matter, nonlinear dynamics, artificial life and intelligence, the internet and architecture, amongst many others.

He draws especially on the work of the late French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, and many of his essays explicitly seek to demonstrate the utility of Deleuze's work for thinking about current scientific and philosophical problems. DeLanda teaches at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation in New York.

Henri Bergson. 1. Life and works Bergson was born in Paris on October 18, 1859; he was the second of seven children of a Polish Father and English mother; both of his parents were Jewish. Bergson was a notably exceptional pupil throughout his childhood. Like his German contemporary, Edmund Husserl, Bergson's original training was in mathematics. Bergson won the first prize in mathematics for the prestigious “Concours Général,” which led to the publication of his solution to a problem by Pascal in 1877. In 1878, Bergson became a French citizen, although he could have chosen English citizenship. His first scholarly publication was in 1886, in the Revue Philosophique; “On Unconscious Simulation in States of Hypnosis” concerns the results of his observations at sessions of hypnosis.

Bergson's second book, Matter and Memory, appeared in 1896. In January 1913, Bergson visited the United States for the first time (Soulez et Worms 2002, p. 134). Bergson died on January 3, 1941 at the age of 81. 2. 3. 4. 5. Deleuze, Gilles   Deleuze is a key figure in postmodern French philosophy. Considering himself an empiricist and a vitalist, his body of work, which rests upon concepts such as multiplicity, constructivism, difference, and desire, stands at a substantial remove from the main traditions of 20th century Continental thought. His thought locates him as an influential figure in present-day considerations of society, creativity and subjectivity. Notably, within his metaphysics he favored a Spinozian concept of a plane of immanence with everything a mode of one substance, and thus on the same level of existence. He argued, then, that there is no good and evil, but rather only relationships which are beneficial or harmful to the particular individuals.

This ethics influences his approach to society and politics, especially as he was so politically active in struggles for rights and freedoms. Table of Contents 1. Due to his families’ lack of money, Deleuze was schooled at a public school before the war. 2. A. 3. HENRI BERGSON.
