In Understanding Comics , McCloud identifies seven distinct ways in which words and pictures can be combined to different effects within comics. These relationships detail varying power dynamics between the the channels of information, dividing word-centric from image-centric relationships, and noting several different ways in which words and pictures can play equal roles in conveying information. He later refined these ideas in Making Comics . Both the image and text provide essential information, with some overlap. (Originally called “Additive” in Understanding Comics , McCloud renamed this relationship in Making Comics .)
