Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) This is your chance to tell us what you think about our plans for a race equality charter mark for higher education ECU is in the process of developing a race equality charter mark. The development of the charter mark follows a two-year project on systemic change in race equality within higher education, and a charter mark scoping exercise which took place in Summer 2013. To apply for the charter mark, institutions will need to commit to the guiding principles and work through the draft charter mark framework. Institution's applications will be based on this framework. It will be used to assess the applications and guide the final decision to award the charter mark to the institution.

We are currently consulting on the framework, and welcome comments and ideas from anyone with an interest in the charter mark. Responding to the consultation To respond to the consultation, you will need to: You might also want to read further background information on the race equality charter mark. Equality & Diversity Consultation Exercises. Screening of New & Revised Policies In accordance with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 and commitments made within our Equality Scheme, the University is consulting on the equality screening of its new and revised policies, procedures and strategic decisions during the period October 2013 to March 2014. Screening has concluded that none of the policies, procedures and strategies require a full equality impact assessment. The policies screened are listed below. Please download a copy of the screening table detailing a summary of the policy and screening outcomes and a Consultation Response Proforma.

Alternatively, hard copies of the documents can be obtained by contacting the University's Policy Implementation Unit at the details given below. The information may be made available, on request, in alternative formats including Braille, computer disc, audiocassette, and in minority languages for those who are not fluent in English. The Race Charter Mark Trial Learning from the success of Athena SWAN, the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU)* is currently developing a race equality framework which higher education institutions can work towards to advance race equality. This framework is being trialled over the next year to ensure that it is fit for purpose, i.e. that the views of minority ethnic staff and students are embedded in the Race Charter so that it will have a meaningful impact on their experience of the sector.

The University of Ulster is one of only thirty institutions across the United Kingdom to be selected to participate in this trial, representing the Northern Ireland experience. To facilitate our participation, the Policy Implementation Unit is in the process of establishing a self-assessment team to: Race Equality Charter Mark Trial - Application Handbook Further information: A-Z of Cultural Ethnicity, Religion and Belief Considerations - St. BME or BAME - What terms should you use?
