For at least two years, the US has been conducting a secretive and immensely sophisticated campaign of mass surveillance and data mining against the Arab world, allowing the intelligence community to monitor the habits, conversations, and activity of millions of individuals at once. And with an upgrade scheduled for later this year, the top contender to win the contract and thus take over the program is a team of about a dozen companies, which were brought together in large part by Aaron Barr — the CEO who resigned from his own firm earlier this year after he was discovered to have planned a full-scale information war against political activists at the behest of corporate clients. Unprecedented surveillance capabilities are being produced by an industry that works in secret on applications that are nonetheless funded by the American public — and which in some cases are used against that very same public.

A truck carrying big bags of marijuana crashed in San Jose, allowing passing motorists and pedestrians to snatch up free pot. The San Jose Mercury News reported that bags of marijuana were strewn about an intersection after the truck crashed Wednesday near Oakridge Mall. The truck driver fled, and several motorists grabbed most of the pot before police arrived at the scene. "Officers eventually collected the remaining bags of weed left at the scene and also found a loaded handgun inside the white truck," the newspaper said. The police were trying to track down the truck driver and anyone who made off with some marijuana, but they had no descriptions of suspects, according to the paper.

For decades, the United States has been embroiled in a debate over whether marijuana should be legalized. These political conflicts have one thing in common. Over the course of this year, we have seen the beginnings of a long overdue shift in the debate over marijuana policy. This evolution in conversation, which has at its foundation an acceptance that it is essentially impossible to stop or even reduce significantly marijuana use, stems in large part from the rhetoric put forth by current and former world leaders.

Fox’s successor, Felipe Calderon, was less direct in a March Washington Post interview, but alluded to the possibility of a similar end result. Over 1,000 Arrested While Protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline. One of the largest acts of civil disobediencein the environmental movement is underway as over 1,000 people have been arrested in front of the White House while gathering to oppose the Keystone XL Pipeline. The pipeline, which will extend from the Athabasca tar sands of Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, is a threat to our environment and threatens the drinking water of millions of people in its path.

The pipeline is especially threatening because it will run from the tar sands in Alberta, Canada through the Ogallala aquifer—one of the world’s largest supplies of fresh water—as well as major rivers that supply substantial agricultural water to farmers and drinking water to millions of Americans. The project got the attention of Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, who found the issue critical enough to write a letter to President Obama saying that he didn’t want the pipeline coming through his state.
