Rachel @ NewhouseSM4. 3 Developments that are Sabotaging the Social Media Movement. By Stanford Smith, Contributing {grow} Columnist I’m worried about the social media movement. Although in some ways the initial enthusiasm in social was overblown, we were right to place high expectations on the convergence of media, social networking, and collaboraton. However, as of late, something seems to be missing.

Thoughtful dialogue has turned to petty conversations about rules and technique. Thought Leadership has morphed into clever personal grandstanding. When I think I’m going a bit overboard I can’t help but notice some disturbing signs – starting with … The Selling Out of Social Media One sign is the gradual co-opting of social media as a broadcast tactic. It seems that the social faithful have gone to sleep and allowed the pendulum to swing too far to the media side of “social media” cutting the heart out of the movement.

Unfortunately, this approach guarantees that Social Media will play second fiddle to PPC, email marketing, and even SEO in the market discussion. Yes. Blaming Technology For Our Shortcomings. There’s an amusing little meme that has been making its way through Facebook lately that takes a shot at people who are a little weak in the grammar and punctuation department. While there are several posts, images and facets to this mini-onslaught of jokes, pictures and even videos, my favorite is the e-card-type image with an attractive woman with her arm around a man saying, “You had me at the appropriate use of ‘you’re.” Having several opportunities recently to speak to groups of educators and parents about social media, I heard the theme popping up there, too.

“Kids today don’t know how to spell, are horrible at grammar and don’t know punctuation,” is the typical complaint. When I ask why they think this is, they inevitably blame it on texting or social media. Image by purpleslog via Flickr I was asked about this phenomenon in my interview for the Verizon Thinkfinity Education Speaker Series, which was published this morning at Thinkfinity.org. I think so. Theaters set aside tweet seats for Twitter users. Perhaps the most unexpected thing about "tweet seats" is that they exist. Perhaps the second-most-unexpected thing about them is that they appear to be a growing trend.

A tweet seat is a seat in a theater that has been approved by the theater for use by someone who would like to tweet a performance. Whip out your cellphone and start tweeting at a rock show and nobody will notice -- the rest of audience is probably shooting cellphone pictures anyway. But try that at the opera and you'll be glared at, unless you are in a tweet seat. Tweet seats first started surfacing at the end of the '00s. According to a recent article about tweet seats in USA Today, twitter-friendly seats have since been adopted by others, including the Carolina Ballet in Raleigh, N.C., the Dayton Opera in Dayton, Ohio, and the historical Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn. And soon tweet seats may be coming to Broadway. If you find the idea of tweet seats hard to swallow, don't despair. Rachel @ NewhouseSM4. Actual Conversation. So Yesterday.

We look askance at those young adults in a swivet of tech-enabled multifriending, endlessly texting, tracking one another’s movements — always distracted from what they are doing by what they are not doing, always connecting to people they are not with rather than people right in front of them. But being neither here nor there has real upsides. It’s less strenuous. And it can be more uplifting. Or, at least, safer, which has a lot going for it these days. Face time — or what used to be known as spending time with friends and family — is exhausting. Maybe that’s why we’re all so quick to abandon it. From grandfathers to tweenies, we’re all taking advantage of the ways in which we can avoid actually talking, much less seeing, one another — but still stay connected. The last time I had face time with my mother, it started out fine.

Face time means you can’t search for intriguing recipes while you are listening to a fresh round of news about a friend’s search for a soul mate. “Text, Mom.” Twitter Quietly Launches Self-Serve Ads - Peter Kafka. File under “knew it was coming but still worth noting”: Twitter has finally launched a self-serve option for its ad platform. It’s still just in test mode, and only open to a handful of advertisers. But those who can use it can now buy ads directly via Twitter, using a credit card and a Web browser, without ever having to talk to a human being.

Right now buyers can only purchase some of Twitter’s ad products — specifically “promoted accounts” and “promoted tweets” — but Twitter says that will expand over time, as it rolls out self-serve to more buyers. This is a step that Twitter has been talking about for a long time — so long that it has had to argue with reporters who swear they saw one nearly a year ago — so it’s not earth-shaking stuff. Yesterday, for instance, when Twitter ad sales head Adam Bain disclosed it onstage during an interview at Business Insider’s Ignition conference, it didn’t seem to register. If our play-by-play coverage is any testament, Kate Spade New York ranks among the strongest brands in the online marketing space.

From Twitter and Tumblr to Instagram and online video, we've been consistently impressed with the quality and strength of voice the fashion and lifestyle label has brought to each new platform. We're not alone: Luxury research and advisory firm L2 ranked Kate Spade second in its third annual Digital IQ Index in the fashion category, just behind Burberry. Four years ago, the label's future was less certain. Founders Kate and Andy Spade left the company in mid-2007, less than a year after it was acquired by Liz Claiborne for $124 million. Deborah Lloyd, formerly of Banana Republic and Burberry, was brought on as president and chief creative officer shortly thereafter, and Craig Leavitt, now CEO of Kate Spade, joined the company as co-president and chief operating officer in 2008.

What was Kate Spade like when you came on board in 2008? We are. Absolutely. Didn't Get That New Job? You Need a Better Facebook Score | Wired Enterprise. Reppify and friends seek to objectify the hiring process — using social network data What if your Klout score — that controversial measure of your “influence” on social networks — determined whether you got a job? What if hiring managers combed through online data metrics trying to determine your work ethic? What if you needed a certain score on the job market equivalent of your SATs to even be considered for a new position? Reppify — a startup based in San Francisco — provides an online dashboard for recruiters and HR departments that seeks to make this a reality.

The company pulls data not only from LinkedIn’s business-centric social network, but also from Facebook, Twitter, and even GitHub profiles, building what it calls a “job fit score.” The Reppify dashboard Hiring managers may appreciate the service. Tena Friery, a research director at the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a consumer rights advocacy group, says this is what happens if you post information to a social network.

Brands underestimate the influence of social media 'comments' In Share 7 in Share The study, conducted by YouGov on behalf of Interactive Intelligence, reveals that nearly half (48%) of middle managers and above from UK companies with a social media presence fail to realise how customer comments on social media sites can influence consumers’ perception of a company or brand.

Quizzing 501 respondents involved in the management of some of the largest companies in the UK, in a cross section of sectors, the survey attempted to work out how businesses use social media, and how highly they rate its importance in their interactions with customers and business prospects. Most large businesses (56%) already have a high profile presence on leading social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and 70% of respondents have, or plan to have, a strategy in place to monitor and respond to comments posted on these sites. 11-22-2011 - Does Klout Measure Influence Accurately? Facebook’s Value Plummets Again, To $75 Billion. For the fourth consecutive time, Facebook’s value has taken a dive, as a SharesPost auction on Wednesday closed at $30 per share, dropping 6.25 percent. Assuming that Facebook still has 2.5 billion outstanding shares, the company’s value is now $75 billion, down from $80 billion at the end of October, $82.25 billion in late September and $82.5 billion in August.

The auctions had plateaued earlier this year at $35 per share, before beginning a slow decline in late summer. The SharesPost results seem to contradict other data: reports of doubling revenues for the social networking site, a successful F8 developer conference, growth in its lobbying and public affairs operation, a very successful partnership with Spotify, and enhanced privacy features.

All of these factors outside of the SharesPost pricing trends would point toward a possible initial public offering of stock sometime in 2012. But the last four auctions of Facebook stock seem to indicate that an IPO needs to wait. The Force Behind Successful Brand Journalism. InShare70 Guest post by Todd Blecher, Communications Director, The Boeing Company Much wisdom did Yoda accumulate.

But experience with social media I think not the Jedi had. Yoda’s insistence that we “do, or do not. When it comes to brand journalism the instruction should be “Try. Starting with walking seems obvious but not everybody does it. From what we’ve learned success with brand journalism seems to flow with the force of some basic principles outlined below. First and foremost, as with any communications effort, brand journalism must be part of an overall communications strategy.

When thinking about brand journalism content an organization must recognize that the stories must, as Shel Holtz recently put it, “be inspiring, clarifying, funny, useful or just plain interesting.” Many organizations, however, won’t allow for thinking like an audience member. For those ready to try brand journalism I would recommend hiring some former journalists.

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. Steve Jobs died more than a month ago, and the media has gone through its two stages of grief: Deification, followed by a backlash to the deification. The latter was hastened by the publication of Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs bio, which presented a warts-and-all version of the Apple founder that contrasted with the airbrushed image that emerged from obituaries. By now, many are grappling with the contradictions of the more fleshed-out and realistic Steve Jobs, but also attempting to learn from the Steve Jobs story. Many might be wondering if it's possible to emulate some of what Jobs achieved without the pettiness and obsessiveness.

Of course, we'll never know, but when reading over Isaacson's bio and reviewing Jobs' achievements, it is possible to pull out what seem to be transferable traits, ideas and attitudes. Twitter Now Offers SMS Notifications For RTs, Favorites And Follows. Google+ had a chance to compete with Facebook. Not anymore. AFP/Getty Images. Shortly after Google launched its new social network in June, many companies—including several online magazines, Slate among them—attempted to create “brand profiles” on the service. The rush was a testament to Google’s power to drive a flood of users to any new site it launches. Though Google+ was pretty rough around the edges, many observers called it a credible alternative to Facebook, so it made sense for companies to get in on the ground floor. Farhad Manjoo is a technology columnist for the Wall Street Journal and the author of True Enough. Follow Yet Google seemed completely surprised by this turn of events. Google did finally release brand pages this week—here’s Slate’s page—but at this point the effort might be moot.

The real test of Google’s social network is what people do after they join. I was an early Google+ skeptic. And yet, I’ve been surprised by just how dreary the site has become. Why am I so sure that Google+ can’t be saved? Rachel @ NewhouseSM4. 6 Emotions You Need To Create To Go Viral On Social Media. Social media networks provide channels of distribution to share information and content that marketers have realized can be very powerful in speed and spread. Brands are constantly working with their marketing teams and agencies crafting creative concepts to spread their message and content. So how do create that contagious content on social networks and make it go “viral”? “Going viral” is every marketers dream but what makes content go viral? What qualities should your content have to induce sharing? Practical and utility articles such as ”69 secret tips to make your blog rock” are well known to induce sharing but emotion is quite often not given enough priority by the creators of content to ensure that their content is shared on Facebook and Twitter and other social media channels.

Researchers at Penn’s Wharton School (Jonah Berger and Katy Milkman) discovered from their study of 3,000 articles from the New York Times that the more emotional stories were shared the most. Why Google+ is no match for Facebook or Twitter – yet | Voluntary Sector Network | Guardian Professional. Another day, another social network to get excited about. This week it isn't a new site as such, but a new function. Google+ recently released branded pages, allowing organisations to engage with users on the site. A lot of people have jumped in head first with Google+, myself included. Some social-media gurus have even decreed that Facebook is dead and Google+ is social-media Utopia; "The King is dead, long live the King" comes to mind. But Google+ shouldn't take up too much of our (limited) time, because our audience simply isn't there yet, especially in the UK.

This may sound short sighted because Google+, while still relatively young, is allegedly breaking records for social network growth. However, given Gmail's large user base, this initial quick growth is unsurprising. As someone who manages social media and online communities at a UK charity, I know that my time is limited.
