Music making around the world is represented by the Horniman’s collection of musical instruments, one of the most comprehensive in the UK. The museum has over 8,000 objects made to produce sound. The oldest is a pair of bone clappers in the form of human hands made in Egypt around 3,500 years ago. Electric guitars and synthesizers are among the most recently acquired. The Horniman interprets instruments in a broad musical and cultural context.
It aims to acquire sound and video recordings for each new instrument. Recent collections of instruments from makers in Belarus and Uzbekistan, and the newest collections associated with traditional music in India, are supported by rich audio and video recordings of performance and instrument making. Instrument makers’ and collectors’ archives are also an important element of the Horniman’s musical instrument collections. The collection contains nearly 1,700 flutes and other wind instruments, statuary, iconography, books, music, trade catalogs, tutors, patents, and other materials mostly related to the flute. Fondé en 1237 par la comtesse Jeanne de Flandre (1200 -1244) dans l’enceinte de son propre palais, l’hôtel de la Salle, l’ancien hôpital est placé sous la protection de la Vierge. Aujourd’hui, les bâtiments de la cour d’honneur du musée offrent un panorama de l’art de construire à Lille du XVe au XVIIIe siècle (salle des malades, bâtiments de vie communautaire des religieuses, aile 1724, chapelle). It is one of the few such museums in Europe, the only in Poland. The collections prides itself on the stringed instruments, especially violins (16th-20th c.), including a violin by Marcin Groblicz and by Dankwart, as well as instruments by Italian masters (Amati, Testore, Guadagnini, Maggini). Among the keyboard instruments there is a pianoforte by A. Walter (Vienna, 1789) and among the aerophones a medieval bronze lituus (13th-15th c.). The Chopin Salon exhibits the composer’s memorabilia realted to his stay in Wielkopolska, including the grand piano he used during concerts in Antonin (South Wielkopolska).
