The UC Davis police officer's matter-of-fact pepper spraying of seated, obviously peaceful students has provoked justifiable outrage. James Fallows summed up the situation with his usual precise moral compass. "This is what happens when authority is unaccountable and has lost any sense of human connection to a subject population," he wrote. "That's what I think here. " Many are calling for Pike's firing, or worse. Thinking about the outrage of friends and colleagues, a James Baldwin passage that I've read many times came back into my mind. [Clark] cannot be dismissed as a total monster; I am sure he loves his wife and children and likes to get drunk. Baldwin recognized that Clark was merely the endpoint of a system that shaped the sheriff just as it shaped the people the sheriff attacked. Structures, in the sociological sense, constrain human agency. UCDavis. Thepoliticalnotebook: Brian Nguyen, photographer.

Open Letter to Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi

Katehi Linda P.B. Katehi, I am a junior faculty member at UC Davis. You are not. I write to you and to my colleagues for three reasons: 1) to express my outrage at the police brutality which occurred against students engaged in peaceful protest on the UC Davis campus today 2) to hold you accountable for this police brutality 3) to demand your immediate resignation Today you ordered police onto our campus to clear student protesters from the quad. What happened next? Without any provocation whatsoever, other than the bodies of these students sitting where they were on the ground, with their arms linked, police pepper-sprayed students. What happened next? Police used batons to try to push the students apart. Police Break Up ‘Occupy Cal’ Encampment At UC Berkeley.

Police Break Up ‘Occupy Cal’ Encampment At UC Berkeley

Sign Up BERKELEY (CBS / AP) — Police moved in to break up a demonstration at the University of California at Berkeley that started when anti-Wall Street protesters tried to establish an encampment on campus. Videos from outside the university’s main administration building Wednesday night showed officers in riot gear pulling people off the steps as the crowd chanted, “We are the 99 percent!” And “Stop Beating Students!” The university reported earlier in the evening that an administrator had told the protesters they could stay around the clock for a week, but only if they didn’t pitch tents, use stoves or other items that would suggest people were sleeping there. The protesters voted not to comply with the demand. A campus spokeswoman had said officers would give people a 10-minute warning before moving in to arrest people who did not comply. FuckAPD.
