The Fields Medal , officially known as International Medal for Outstanding Discoveries in Mathematics , is a prize awarded to two, three, or four mathematicians not over 40 years of age at each International Congress of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), a meeting that takes place every four years. The colloquial name is in honour of Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields . [ 1 ] Fields was instrumental in establishing the award, designing the medal itself, and funding the monetary component. [ 1 ] The Fields Medal is often viewed as the greatest honour a mathematician can receive. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It comes with a monetary award, which since 2006 is C$ 15,000. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] The medal was first awarded in 1936 to Finnish mathematician Lars Ahlfors and American mathematician Jesse Douglas , and it has been awarded every four years since 1950. Flowers for Algernon is a science fiction short story and subsequent novel written by Daniel Keyes . The short story, written in 1958 and first published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction , won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1960. [ 2 ] The novel was published in 1966 and was joint winner of that year's Nebula Award for Best Novel (with Babel-17 ). [ 3 ] The eponymous Algernon is a laboratory mouse who has undergone surgery to increase his intelligence by artificial means.

While the latter part was a boom and bust cycle, the Internet boom is sometimes meant to refer to the steady commercial growth of the Internet with the advent of the world wide web , as exemplified by the first release of the Mosaic web browser in 1993, and continuing through the 1990s. The period was marked by the founding (and, in many cases, spectacular failure) of a group of new Internet -based companies commonly referred to as dot-coms .

The Munich massacre is an informal name for events that occurred during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , Bavaria in southern West Germany , when members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and eventually killed by the Palestinian group Black September . [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] [ 7 ] Shortly after the crisis began, the Palestinians demanded the release of 234 prisoners held in Israeli jails. [ 8 ] Black September called the operation " Ikrit and Biram ", [ 9 ] after two Christian Palestinian villages whose inhabitants were expelled by the Haganah in 1948. By the end of the ordeal, the kidnappers had killed eleven Israeli athletes and coaches and a West German police officer . Five of the eight members of Black September were killed by police officers during a failed rescue attempt. The three surviving assassins were captured, but later released by West Germany following the hijacking by Black September of a Lufthansa airliner.
