Feathers. Helmut Newton: Sprinting down a runway and trekking through a desert in high heels - stunning collection of iconic pictures by the renowned fashion photographer. By Daily Mail Reporter Published: 10:00 GMT, 20 January 2013 | Updated: 11:17 GMT, 20 January 2013 These distinctive images show how a man who preferred to shoot models in the street instead of studios changed the face of fashion photography. Helmut Newton, who acquired international fame in the 1970s when working principally for French Vogue, had been criticised during an earlier British Vogue shoot for his break with convention.

After taking a model onto the streets during an early assignment, he was sternly told by the editor that 'Ladies, Helmut, do not lean against lampposts'. An alternative runway: A model flees a landing plane in a photograph by Helmut Newton in British Vogue, 1967 Striking: Newton preferred to shoot his photographs in streets or interiors rather than studios, such as this image of a glamorous model pulling on a horse's reins from French Vogue in 1969 He was also commissioned by Playboy, had a heart attack at 50, and lived in Monte Carlo.
