Science. Over 30 years ago, Carol Dweck and her colleagues became interested in students' attitudes about failure.

Science

They noticed that some students rebounded while other students seemed devastated by even the smallest setbacks. After studying the behavior of thousands of children, Dr. Dweck coined the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. When students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. Therefore they put in extra time and effort, and that leads to higher achievement. Recent advances in neuroscience have shown us that the brain is far more malleable than we ever knew.

At the same time that these neuroscientific discoveries were gaining traction, researchers began to understand the link between mindsets and achievement. What does growth mindset teaching look like in the real world? WOOP Goal-setting. Wish Something you really want to accomplish.

How stress affects your body - Sharon Horesh Bergquist. Let’s take a closer look at how the stress response works.

How stress affects your body - Sharon Horesh Bergquist

When your brain senses danger, your amygdala, the part of your brain that helps with emotional processing, sends an alarm signal to your hypothalamus. Acting as command central, your hypothalamus activates your sympathetic nervous system. This part of your autonomic nervous system leads to the release of adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) from your adrenal glands into your blood stream.

All this happens in a split second. After adrenaline subsides, the second phase of your stress response kicks in. There are two parts to your stress response—turning it on and turning it off. Without the latter relaxation phase of the stress response, stress can spiral into a chronic state. Stress can even take years off your life. Fortunately, you can dampen your stress response by changing how you perceive a stressful event.

When I see an increasing amount of kids and teens being taught mindfulness in their schools I see possibility. My wife and I ran a family retreat at Denim N’ Dirt Ranch and long before the deadline it was sold out showing me an increasing desire of parents wanting to bring mindfulness into their families. As people start to engage mindfulness I’ve noticed a few things they begin to do differently. Practice Being Curious One of the essential attitudes of mindfulness is beginner’s mind. Abraham Joshua Heschel said, “Life is routine and routine is resistance to wonder.”
