The Useless Web. Reality Heding: Understanding Financial Market Dynamics with Truth from Big Social and Behavior Data. Reality Hedging: Big Data for Finance I am in the Human Dynamics Group of MIT Media Lab led by my advisor Sandy Pentland. Currently I am on leave from MIT to do a startup focusing on big-data driven finance.

My expertise and past experiences are related to big data, machine learning, social dynamics, complex systems, large-scale mobile sensing and overall the understanding of economics and crowds behavior using quantitative approaches. I now apply these ideas to financial markets and macro economics. My approach and this new field, known as "Reality Hedging", tries to understand financial markets dynamics and macro economics through the better understanding and models of social systems, big data measurements of people and crowd, and complex systems. Women in tech: why female representation matters | Guardian Sustainable Business | Guardian Professional. Rewind to one afternoon in 2006 and I'm at my first academic conference about computer games. I've been a technology journalist for a decade, a veteran of countless tech events on both a grand and small scale and this is the first time in 10 years I've had to queue for the loo. "Ah," I think to myself as I wait my turn, "this is where all the women are. " The men make the technology, while the women think about it. However, any suggestion that the consumer and software technology industries are demographically stratified is an overwhelming understatement. This isn't encouraging for the young women who excel at computer science and maths in school.

In 2005, women made up 24% of computer science students. Educators have been gnashing their collective teeth to figure out why. Yet the technology industry is not without impressive female role models. Let me explain. A software engineer performs exactly the same type of role. In March 1936, an unusual confluence of forces occurred in Santa Clara County. A long cold winter delayed the blossoming of the millions of cherry, apricot, peach, and prune plum trees covering hundreds of square miles of the Valley floor.

Then, unlike many years, the rains that followed were light and too early to knock the blossoms from their branches. Instead, by the billions, they all burst open at once. Seemingly overnight, the ocean of green that was the Valley turned into a low, soft, dizzyingly perfumed cloud of pink and white. Uncounted bees and yellow jackets, newly born, raced out of their hives and holes, overwhelmed by this impossible banquet. Then came the wind. It roared off the Pacific Ocean, through the nearly uninhabited passes of the Santa Cruz Mountains and then, flattening out, poured down into the great alluvial plains of the Valley.
