Ireland Country Profile. HISTORY Archaeologists think the first people to settle in Ireland arrived around 6000 B.C.

Ireland Country Profile

By 3500 B.C., settlers were using stone tools to clear farmlands. Around 700 B.C., a diverse and technologically advanced culture from central Europe called the Celts began to settle the island. They would thrive there for nearly 2,000 years. In the ninth century A.D., Viking invaders began raids into Ireland. They established settlements that later became some of the country's main cities, including the capital, Dublin. In 1170, Norman Vikings who had taken control of England invaded Ireland and made it an English territory. By the 1820s, British laws unfair to Catholics had sparked a mass movement for Irish sovereignty.

In 1948, most of Ireland became an independent country, while six mainly Protestant counties in the northeast remained a British territory. New Zealand. NATURE Because of its remote location, New Zealand is rich in unusual wildlife not seen anywhere else in the world.

Nearly all the land animals are birds and many of these species have lost the ability to fly. The Maori people and European settlers introduced animals to the islands and the flightless birds had no defense against them. In the last 1,000 years, half of all animals on the islands have become extinct. Deforestation and draining of swamp land is also threatening many remaining species, including the kiwi bird. Fewer than 75,000 wild kiwis remain. Bats are the only land mammals to have made the ocean crossing. Pilot and humpback whales visit the islands on their way to breed, and orcas come to feed on dolphins. India Country Profile. HISTORY India's earliest known civilization arose about 5,000 years ago on the Indus River in what is now Pakistan.

India Country Profile

Archaeologists uncovered the remains of two huge cities with brick houses, piped water, and sewer systems. Nobody knows why, but these cities, called Harappa and Mohenjo Daro, were abandoned in 1700 B.C. The Aryan people were farmers from Central Asia who arrived in India around 1500 B.C. They spoke Sanskrit, one of the world's oldest known languages. The Vedic Scriptures, writings that form the basis of the Hindu religion, were written during the Aryan reign. In the 200-year reign of the Gupta Empire, starting in the fourth century A.D., arts, crafts, and sciences flourished.

Beginning in the 16th century, following a series of invasions by Muslim forces, a Mongol leader named Babur founded the Mongol Empire. In the late 1400s, Europeans arrived in India and began setting up trading companies. Travel Blog Year 8.

Listen to English around the World.
