TV Set-Top Box Use Dropping. 10 Jul, 2012By: Erik Gruenwedel Set-top Box Households increasingly accessing pay-TV via PCs, smartphones, tablets and not traditional set-top boxes The percentage of global households using set-top boxes (STBs) to access pay-TV channels is projected to drop more than 31% by 2015 from 82% household penetration in 2011, according to new data from IHS Screen Digest. Instead, nearly 50% of households will access TV content through PCs, smartphones, tablets and other multi-screen devices. Multi-screen is defined as a service that allows the viewing of video on multiple platforms beyond the traditional mode of televisions connected to STBs. IHS reported that by 2016, set-top boxes will relinquish their customary position as the near-exclusive video consumption device among the 43 major cable, satellite and Internet protocol television (IPTV) providers that are proceeding with multi-screen deployments.

Mitt tweet: ABC News producers analyzed real-time social media reactions to two GOP debates—including a spike in tweets when Mitt Romney challenged Rick Perry to a $10,000 bet. During this Sunday’s Super Bowl, a record five million viewers are expected to tweet or make other social media comments—not just about the game, but also about the many beer, snack, and car ads that are integral to the annual sports and entertainment ritual. This activity—up from 900,000 people making Super Bowl posts during last year’s game—is now happening at such a vast scale that executives in television, broadcast news, and advertising expect analytics of the comments to start shaping advertising choices—and even the direction of news coverage—in near real-time.
By the time next year’s Super Bowl rolls around, advertisers—poring over social media analytics of their ads—are likely to replace less-liked versions of ads with better-rated ones as the game goes on. With the proliferation of handheld devices, especially tablets, Comcast continues to develop more ways Xfinity TV customers can watch their favorite shows and movies on their terms.
Today, Comcast is offering customers yet another choice as we begin to roll out AnyPlay™, a device which enables live TV on a variety of Internet-enabled displays in the home. With AnyPlay, you can watch the channels that are included in your linear channel subscription through the Xfinity TV app on the iPad®, and very soon the Motorola Xoom™ tablet. This means that while someone else watches a program in the living room, for example, you can watch another show on your iPad from the backyard deck, kitchen or other places around the home. Here's how it works...the AnyPlay device works the same as any other set top box in the home, but instead of delivering the incoming channel lineup to a television, AnyPlay delivers the lineup to the Wi-Fi router on the home network.
From Amazon to HBO Go to YouTube: App availability on 2012 TVs compared (big chart) | TV and Home Theater. "Smart TV" is even more common than ever this year among the TVs of 2012 , and as always, content is king. With that in mind we present the chart above, summarizing the various major apps available from most major TV manufacturers this year. As you can see, pretty much everything has Netflix, and the differences begin from there. Compared with last year , the major addition to the chart is HBO Go, which is currently exclusive to Samsung TVs. It's a superb app with a wealth of content that helps makes Samsung's suite the most compelling of the year, especially for HBO subscribers (at least, those whose TV providers support it ).
On October 24th Samsung cemented its content lead by adding one of our favorite services , Amazon Instant. We also added a "Roku" column this year to illustrate a basic point: for $50, the price of a Roku LT , you can access a substantial array of content, including HBO Go, on any TV. Media Training.
OTTtv World Summit. Schmidt says Google TV heading to Europe | Digital Media. Google TV will be launched in Europe early next year, despite its rocky start in the U.S., company Chairman Eric Schmidt told an audience in Edinburgh, Scotland, last night. Delivering the keynote MacTaggart Lecture at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International TV Festival, one of Britain's premier television industry events, Schmidt sought to reassure broadcasters, according to a Reuters report on the speech. "We seek to support the content industry by providing an open platform for the next generation of TV to evolve, the same way Android is an open platform for the next generation of mobile," Schmidt said. "We expect Google TV to launch in Europe early next year, and of course the U.K. will be among the top priorities.
" Google TV is a software platform that interacts with a user's TV set, along with his or her Internet, cable, and/or satellite hookup to bring a combined TV-Web-app experience to conventional televisions. Posted at 01:57 PM ET, 08/26/2011 Aug 26, 2011 05:57 PM EDT TheWashingtonPost Apple is reportedly mulling a subscription TV service.
(Mark Lennihan - AP) Apple is reportedly mulling a move into subscription TV. Apple, according to a tidbit in a Wall Street Journal article, is “working on new technology to deliver video to televisions, and has been discussing whether to try to launch a subscription TV service.”Such a move would be an ambitious project for new chief executive Tim Cook to tackle. Meanwhile, Google made news last week (remember that?) The two services are different — Google is all about making your TV Web friendly, while Apple’s sounds more like taking your iTunes video library to the next level.
But all of this spells bad news for the cable industry, which is seeing more and more people ditch their service in favor of Netflix, Hulu and, well, Apple TV and Google TV. Not surprisingly, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt sees a brighter future for the poorly received Google TV at this point than almost anyone else does.
Schmidt was in Great Britain the past few days once again showing off his virtuosic skills at generating headlines for the search company. He spoke about Google+ and privacy. He allegedly criticized the Brits' education system. He also made this comment, according to the Globe and Mail: "Virtually all the television manufacturers on their very high end will eventually adopt Google TV...or perhaps one of the competitors that will emerge.
Schmidt said this adoption of Google TV would occur within five years. Google TV is software that places a Web browser on TV sets. But that's not how it's worked out. TiVo To Ship Place Shifting Transcoder Box This Year | Gizmo Lovers Blog. I’ve actually been working on a post about this for a little while, and on today’s financial conference call President and CEO Tom Rogers provided the final piece.
Last month at CES 2012 TiVo was showing off a transcoding box and EngadgetHD has a very nice photo gallery of the unit (which is where I ganked the photo from). I didn’t report on it at the time since I wanted to gather some more info. Just before I left for my wedding & honeymoon I had a conversation with TiVo’s Public Relations Manager, Jessica Loebig, which filled in more info but left a few questions.
She arranged for another conversation, with TiVo’s VP and GM of Product Marketing, Jim Denney, last Friday, just after my return. I’ve been a bit swamped catching up on life, and my day job, so more posts based on that conversation are forthcoming. On today’s call Tom Rogers stated that the transcoding box would ship “later this year”, which I believe is the first firm public statement. » Sling Media.
