Google claims to have invented a quantum computer, but IBM begs to differ

The tech giant announced its achievement of a much vaunted goal: quantum supremacy. This perhaps ill-chosen term (coined by physicist John Preskill) is meant to convey the huge speedup that processors based on quantum-mechanical systems are predicted to exhibit, relative to even the fastest classical computers. Google’s benchmark was achieved on a new type of quantum processor, code-named Sycamore, consisting of 54 independently addressable superconducting junction devices (of which only 53 were working for the demonstration). A glimpse of a newly discovered exoplanet. The exoplanet LHS 3844b illustrated here is located 48.6 light-years from Earth and orbits an M dwarf star – the most common and long-lived type of star in our galaxy.

A glimpse of a newly discovered exoplanet

Using data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, researchers were able to capture a rare glimpse of the exoplanet's surface. However, it wasn’t a win in the search for life on other planets. It’s likely that LHS 3844b has little to no atmosphere, with its surface resembling that of Earth’s Moon or Mercury – covered in dark, lava rock. It’s a tidally locked planet, which means that it has a permanent day and night side. The temperatures are likely to be very extreme, killing any organisms on the planet's surface. Planet LHS 3844b was discovered in 2018 by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Satellite Survey (TESS) mission.

Could Life Survive on a Planet Orbiting a Black Hole? In the 2014 movie Interstellar, astronauts investigate planets orbiting a supermassive black hole as potential homes for human life.

Could Life Survive on a Planet Orbiting a Black Hole?

A supermassive black hole warps surrounding space-time, according to Einstein’s theory of general relativity, and at least one of the planets in the movie, called Miller’s planet, experienced time passing at a slowed-down rate. For each hour the astronauts spent on the planet, several years passed outside the black hole’s influence. Asteroid may collide with Earth, ESA warns: 'Non-zero... probability' Asteroids known as near-Earth objects are among the most dangerous space items, with space agencies around the world keeping a close eye on them.

Asteroid may collide with Earth, ESA warns: 'Non-zero... probability'

The European Space Agency is paying particular attention to asteroid 2019 SU3, which may collide with Earth as soon as 70 years from now. The space rock was recently added to the ESA's Risk List due to the potential for it to collide with Earth on Sept. 16, 2084. Our Ravenous Galaxy Keeps Stealing Smaller Galaxies. Big Thief Orbiting is par for the course in our universe.

Our Ravenous Galaxy Keeps Stealing Smaller Galaxies

The Earth orbits the Sun, the Moon orbits the Earth, and more than 50 galaxies orbit the Milky Way, the biggest of those being the Large Magellanic Cloud. Now, new research indicates that at least six of the galaxies currently orbiting the Milky Way actually used to orbit the Large Magellanic Cloud directly — until our galaxy snatched them away. Pick Six. Birth of Light in the Universe. Thirteen billion years ago our universe was dark.

Birth of Light in the Universe

There were neither stars nor galaxies; there was only hydrogen gas left over after the Big Bang. Eventually hydrogen atoms began to clump together to form stars—the very first ones to exist—initiating a major phase in the evolution of the universe, known as the Epoch of Reionization, or EoR. “Defining the evolution of the EoR is extremely important for our understanding of astrophysics and cosmology,” says Nichole Barry with ASTRO 3-D, about a signal that has been traveling across the Universe for 12 billion years, bringing us nearer to understanding the life and death of the very earliest stars. “So far, though, no one has been able to observe it,” said Barry with the University of Melbourne and the ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (ASTRO 3-D).

India’s Moon Mission Was Anything But A Failure. Here’s Why

That simple sentiment, bursting with painful verisimilitude, was the order of the day when the Indian Space Research Organisation’s attempted, historic soft landing of its uncrewed contraption near the moon’s south pole went awry. Things were initially looking good for the Vikram lander – and its internalised exploratory rover, Pragyan – for some time, before the descent went off course during its final moments. Due to land on the lunar surface around a month after it was launched into space, technicians instead lost contact with it seconds before it was supposed to touch down in the dusty, unexplored regolith.

The Strangest Phenomena in the Cosmos? In 1966, Erast Gliner, a young physicist at the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in Leningrad, proposed a hypothesis that very large stars should collapse into what could now be called Generic Objects of Dark Energy (GEODEs) that appear to be black holes when viewed from the outside but, unlike black holes, they contain dark energy instead of a singularity.

The Strangest Phenomena in the Cosmos?

Fast forward to new research at the University of Hawaii at Manoa: physicists usually assume that a cosmologically large system, such as the universe, is insensitive to details of the small systems contained within it. Astrophysicist Kevin Croker and mathematician Joel Weiner have identified and corrected a subtle error that was made when applying Einstein’s equations to model the growth of the universe that shows that this assumption can fail for the compact objects that remain after the collapse and explosion of very large stars. Incredibly Weird Dark Energy –“Its Source Unknown, Location Unknown, Physics Unknown” 'Chameleon Theory' Could Explain Why The Universe Is Expanding. Can a chameleon build a galaxy?

'Chameleon Theory' Could Explain Why The Universe Is Expanding

According to new computer models, yes. This isn't a surrealist joke but rather the implication of recent simulations that aim to explain the inner workings of dark energy, a mysterious force that is driving apart everything in the universe. The findings, published July 8 in the journal Nature Astronomy, lend support to a model of dark energy known as Chameleon Theory. Eta Carinae. Researchers demonstrate new path to reliable quantum computation. Researchers at the University of Chicago published a novel technique for improving the reliability of quantum computers by accessing higher energy levels than traditionally considered. Most prior work in quantum computation deals with "qubits," the quantum analogue of binary bits that encode either zero or one. The new work instead leverages "qutrits," quantum analogues of three-level trits capable of representing zero, one or two.

This Is Why Every Galaxy Doesn't Have The Same Amount Of Dark Matter. The dwarf galaxy UGC 5340 is forming stars irregularly, likely due to a gravitational interaction with a companion galaxy that is not pictured here. Gravitational interactions often trigger new star formation, leading to the collapse of interior gas clouds.

Dwarf galaxies should have widely varying dark matter ratios, with a hypothetical but transient dark matter-free population emerging as a necessary prediction. NASA, ESA, and the LEGUS team There are two assumptions that everyone makes about the Universe for extremely good reasons, but they might not necessarily be true. Astronomers Spot 'Forbidden Planet' in Neptunian Desert. Astronomers have used a desert-based observatory to identify an exoplanet that falls in the middle of what scientists had dubbed the Neptunian Desert. That term refers to a phenomenon that astronomers had noticed by which there seemed to be an absence of Neptune-size planets that orbit their star in less than four days.

Exploding stars led to humans walking on two legs, radical study suggests. It was the evolutionary leap that defined the species: while other apes ambled around on all fours, the ancestors of humans rose up on two legs and, from that lofty position, went on to conquer the world. The benefits of standing tall in the African savannah are broadly nailed down, but what prompted our distant forebears to walk upright is far from clear. Now, in a radical proposal, US scientists point to a cosmic intervention: protohumans had a helping hand from a flurry of exploding stars, they say. The Biggest Myth About Black Holes – Starts With A Bang! Black holes are some of the strangest, most wondrous objects in all the Universe. With huge amounts of mass concentrated into an extremely small volume, they inevitably collapse down to singularities, surrounded by event horizons from which nothing can escape.

These are the densest objects in the entire Universe. Whenever anything comes too close to one, the forces from the black hole will tear it apart; when any matter, antimatter, or radiation crosses the event horizon, it simply falls down to the central singularity, growing the black hole and adding to its mass. These properties about black holes are all true. Dark matter BREAKTHROUGH: CERN experiment hunts down dark photon particles. How an Inflating Universe Could Create a Multiverse. Paul M. Could Parallel Universes Be Physically Real? Forbes. The Nature of the Human Body – Leonardo da Vinci. As a young painter in Florence, Leonardo studied human anatomy primarily to improve his art. His forerunner as an artist-engineer, Leon Battista Alberti, had written that anatomical study was essential for an artist because properly depicting people and animals requires beginning with an understanding of their insides. “Isolate each bone of the animal, on this add its muscles, then clothe all of it with its flesh,” he wrote in On Painting, which became a bible for Leonardo. “Before dressing a man we first draw him nude, then we enfold him in draperies.
