i'm the guy who likes music, pics, movies, the Lakers and travel. Yup that's me.

Super Bowl Spectacular Manspace. For me, watching sports is like seeing ducks in a pond quack at one another. Why are fans always screaming, flapping 4-foot foam hands and sporting high-energy face paint? It makes me wanna give everyone a permanent time out. (And while I can barely remember who’s playing, I do know that Genevieve Morton and the Black Eyed Peas left me off their Super Bowl Bash guest list.)

So as Super Bowl Sunday approaches, I’ve become obsessed with trying to conceptualize a football-centric space that doesn’t suck. The Kensington sofa from Restoration Hardware. David Hicks by Ashley Hicks LaFiorentina fabric epitomizes geometric masculinity. Buckhead printed silk matka from Staceage puts a playful spin on an otherwise traditionally dude-centric silhouette. Rodney White showed up on the art scene about six years ago and has since become a classic. Wallpaper can work wonders in a guy’s space.

To light up any gentleman’s life, give him Nelson pendants. Can This Be Made Into A Room? Michael Kors Mens Fall 2010. Modern Anthology. If a Dude Wants Throw Pillows, Where Can He Go? | Co.Design. Let's face it. Men have gotten in touch with their feminine side. With shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the advent of the male mani-pedi, and the distinction between gay and straight guy fashion blurred like never before, it might be time for dudes to get back in touch with their manly side. Such is the hope of Becka Citron and John Marsala, co-owners of a new 1,000-square-foot retail store and studio called Modern Anthology in Brooklyn. The store is a curatorial mix of both decorative curiosities, like a stuffed armadillo and German Army blankets, and functional objects, like Stanley metal thermoses and a Modernica knockoff of Eames?

Wildly popular plastic rocker. The idea: Close the gender gap in today's home-design offerings. She's both right and wrong. So Citron and Marsala are trying to bring it all together in a store conceived of for design-minded 20- to 40-something-year-old dudes. Not that it's one big broshack. Talk about manly. Modern Anthology is open for business. Blog, A Tale of Two Financings. Boom. Profitably just closed $1.1M, and I think I am feeling every emotion at once.

While the rest of the team is ready to go out and celebrate (and has earned it!) , I feel like I could use a nap, a hug, a good cry, and then perhaps a Manhattan or two. In July, we tried to raise $500k and barely eked out $300k. A few milestones later, we went out again to raise $500k and closed $1.1M, literally turning away eager investors at our door…but even that came after 6 long months of grizzly fundraising grind.

So what switch was flipped where suddenly investors were clawing to get into the deal? I’ve read many blog posts by entrepreneurs who have raised money successfully, and honestly, I can’t relate to most of their experiences. The post is broken up chronologically, so feel free to jump to the end if you like. Mar - July 2010: $0k from Founder Institute and their introductions Or, quite honestly, it’s possible we were just unlucky. June - July 2010: $250k more from other angels.
