When a droplet falls into shallow water, it creates a crown or "coronet". This droplet simulation was calculated using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) . SPH is one of the most impressive-looking fluid simulation techniques. http://www.bugman123.com/FluidMotion/index.html

10 Best Intranets of 2010 (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)

Summary: Intranet team size has doubled, but companies do get something for this investment, including better-integrated social features and better information filtering. 70% of winners used SharePoint, but with extensive customization. The 10 best-designed intranets for 2013 are: http://www.nngroup.com/articles/intranet-design/
January 4. 2011 What an amazing way to start out 2011, learning that one of our customers received the impressive Nielsen Norman Group Intranet Design Award for the InnovCenter project. Our partner, weListen, worked with Mota-Engil to develop InnovCenter using the Telligent Evolution platform. This year's winning intranets maximized the collective knowledge, ideas and experience of their organizations' workforce by enabling employees to do the following and more: http://telligent.com/company/news/b/teamblog/archive/2011/01/04/congratulations-to-mota-engil-s-innovcenter-for-being-awarded-nielsen-norman-group-s-2011-intranet-design-award.aspx

Congratulations to Mota-Engil’s InnovCenter for being awarded Nielsen Norman Group’s 2011 Intranet Design Award!

Graphical user interfaces have a rich vocabulary with screen components for many different situations. Poor design and implementation of these screen components have profound implications on the overall user experience. In this seminar, we’ll explore the behavior of application screen components, or widgets, including both standard behaviors that users expect and unique interface components designed for specific interactions.

Different platforms require different user interface design. What works for mouse-driven desktop design is not the same as for gesture-driven touchscreen design. Additionally, apps allows us to streamline functionality in more phone-specific design.

Continuing advances in information and communications technology (ICT) are increasing the scale and connectivity of today's engineered systems. Managing the resultant complexity is becoming the central challenge for UK industry and government: from software, to cities and even stock exchanges. Across the UK, a wide range of internationally leading research groups are addressing this challenge. In many cases they draw inspiration from biology, which provides innumerable examples of systems that cope with complexity. From cells to ecosystems, biology achieves scalability, adaptability, self-repair, and robustness, often by exploiting "emergent" system-level behaviours. http://videolectures.net/sscs06_bullock_ics/

World population

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population The world population is the total number of living humans on Earth . As of today, it is estimated to number 7.075 billion by the United States Census Bureau (USCB). [ 1 ] The USCB estimates that the world population exceeded 7 billion on March 12, 2012. [ 2 ] According to a separate estimate by the United Nations Population Fund , it reached this milestone on October 31, 2011. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] The world population has experienced continuous growth since the end of the Great Famine and the Black Death in 1350, when it stood at around 370 million. [ 6 ] The highest rates of growth – global population increases above 1.8% per year – were seen briefly during the 1950s, and for a longer period during the 1960s and 1970s. The growth rate peaked at 2.2% in 1963, and had declined to 1.1% by 2011.
http://code.google.com/p/gource/ Gource is a software version control visualization tool. See more of Gource in action on the Videos page. Introduction Software projects are displayed by Gource as an animated tree with the root directory of the project at its centre. Directories appear as branches with files as leaves.

Visualising Subversion with Gource

http://nooshu.com/visualising-subversion-with-gource Over the weekend I stumbled across a video link , released (I assume) by Flickr. The video is a visualisation of the last 7 years of commits into the Flickr Subversion repository. Wow, there’s a lot of work been done to Flickr over the past 7 years! What’s even more interesting is you can easily create the same type of visualisation with your own project using an open-source project called Gource.

Complexity and the Nexus of Leadership: Leveraging Nonlinear Science to Create Ecologies of Innovation Jeffrey Goldstein, James K. Hazy, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein: Books

“This wonderfully useful book integrates the best thinking in the fields of complexity science, leadership, and innovation. The result is a useful and practical guide to using key complexity concepts to understand and enact leadership in a way that facilitates continuous innovation.”-- Ellen Van Velsor, Senior Fellow, Center for Creative Leadership "For the lifelong student and (hopefully successful) practitioner of leadership, the authors greatly enriched my understanding of leadership and break new, exciting ground. For the engineer and technologist, they give me comfort that there is real science underpinning the art of leadership. They provide broad shoulders for others to stand on." -- Reed Harrison, CEO, Antietam Strategy Partners, Inc.

Global Data & Complex Systems

by Nathan Eagle May 5, 2010 Petabytes of data about human movements, transactions, and communication patterns are continuously being generated by everyday technologies such as mobile phones and credit cards. In collaboration with the mobile phone, internet, and credit card industries, Eagle and colleagues are aggregating and analyzing behavioral data from over 250 million people from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Eagle discusses projects arising from these collaborations that involve inferring behavioral dynamics on a broad spectrum of scales from risky behavior in a group of MIT freshman to population-level behavioral signatures, including cholera outbreaks in Rwanda and wealth in the UK.

Collective Intelligence

We have been immersed in complexity all this time. The Newtonian tools of proto-science approximated the way it all works with such power that the Industrial Revolution took shape - however, look at the consequences of the linear way things were exploited: terrible consequences. Hence the need for a refined understanding of complexity and the systems in which we travel. Good luck with your exploration. Remember that the Universe is made of energy, information and consciousness. That is the starting point. by pauljacobson Dec 19

Thanks for this pearl. For the moment, I just learn what are complexity sciences. I discovered this field via Edgar Morin. by agyeman Dec 19

I am also sharing this Pearl with Patrice - so I will curate it carefully and hope you also benefit from my inquiry. by pauljacobson Dec 18
