Brain Surface and Tractography Viewer. Surface Opacity: Surface Overlay Display Range: Histogram Min: Max: Minimum Track Length: The pial surface is the "outer" cortical surface and represents the boundary between gray matter and cerebrospinal fluid.
Typically, it is the surface that comes to mind when visually thinking of a brain. The gray matter is usually only a few millimeters thick and plays a key role in higher functioning and consciousness. The white matter surface marks the boundary between the outer gray tissue and the inner white tissue. Surface overlay functions are calculated at each point on a surface, and colored according to value. We have the following surface overlays (which are calculated at each vertex point on a surface mesh): k₁: Maximum principal curvature -- tends to highlight the folds of the brain along their main axes. Secrets of the Mind. Welcome to the companion Web site to "Secrets of the Mind," originally broadcast on October 23, 2001.
The film delves into the mind-tingling efforts of neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran to discover how the brain works. Here's what you'll find online: Mind Games Your mind sees the classic Necker cube either as pointing upward to the right or downward to the left—but not both at the same time, no matter how hard you try. Give the cube a peek, along with an intriguing series of other visual challenges. From Ramachandran's Notebook One patient had gnawing sensations in his phantom arm until he discovered his discarded limb was being devoured by maggots.

Neuroanatomy Tutorial. The Secret Life of the Brain : 3-D Brain Anatomy. Sheep Brain Laboratory Manual© Welcome to the laboratory component of PSYC*2410.
The purpose of this lab is to introduce you to the gross anatomy of the brain. Sheep brains are used in this lab because they are easy to extract, reasonably inexpensive (they are procured from the food industry), large, and mammalian. Before we begin our dissections, you should acquaint yourself with the directional terms used in anatomy. A structure is anterior to another structure when it is closer to the nose of an animal (see the above diagram). Some texts use the terms anterior and rostral interchangeably, but we will stick to anterior. We begin our exploration of the sheep brain with the ventral surface. Plate 1: Some of the structures we wish to study are obscured by the pituitary gland (7).
Major Structures of the Ventral Surface: The anterior ventral surface is taken-up by the ventral portion of the frontal cortex (1) and the olfactory bulbs (2). A given cranial nerve may be involved with a whole collection of these systems. University - Cranial Nerves. Inside the Brain: An Interactive Tour.
