Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), the startup behind the world's first supersonic overland transport system, has announced that construction for a passenger-ready Hyperloop will begin next year.

"We feel now that we're at a stage where questions are answered on a theoretical level so now we're moving on to prototyping," Dirk Ahlborn, CEO of HTT, told IBTimes UK. A five-mile stretch of the Hyperloop system will be built in a new "sustainable 21st Century town" midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco called Quay Valley, which is also set to be built in 2016.

According to Ahlborn, Hyperloop will be ready for passengers by 2018, the same year that the company plans to begin construction on the first full-scale version. "This five-mile stretch will allow us to completely test the technology, from the boarding process to the safety procedures - really everything except top speed," Ahlborn said. OK, it will only run five miles around central California, and it won’t come anywhere close to the 800 mph Musk promised, but it’s a start. The Hyperloop, detailed by the SpaceX and Tesla Motors CEO in a 57-page alpha white paper in August 2013, is a transportation network of above-ground tubes that would span hundreds of miles. Thanks to extremely low air pressure inside those tubes, capsules filled with people zip through them at near supersonic speeds. The idea is to build a five-mile track in Quay Valley, a planned community (itself a grandiose idea) that will be built from scratch on 7,500 acres of land around Interstate 5, midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. They’re serious about this, too. Next Big Future: Elon Musk will be Hyperloop test track and could have annual Hyperloop pod racing. Elon Musk announced the development of a test facility for the innovative air-rail system with a five-mile track.

Back in 2013, Elon Musk introduced the world to this dream a 60 page white paper. The paper caused a stir. The idea—a levitating, solar-power supersonic train—was both pure geek porn and a transportation revolution in the making. It definitely captured people’s imagination. On August 12th, 2013 Elon Musk outlined his idea for a fast, relatively inexpensive model for transportation – the Hyperloop.

Based at least in part on the idea of a pneumatic tube, the Hyperloop was said to be not only faster and less expensive than a high-speed rail system that had been approved for construction, but perhaps most surprisingly, that the Hyperloop was even possible in the first place. The system described by Musk would shoot passengers through a tube at speeds up to 800 mph, offering a theoretical trip from San Fransisco to Los Angeles in just a half hour. Immediately after the announcement, Musk opened up all of his research and asked for any interested parties to pick up the ball and run with it. Musk, as you might know, is pretty busy these days running Tesla Motors and SpaceX (both Techaeris favorites). Almost a month after the announcement, a California startup had picked up that ball, and opened a crowd-funding campaign to raise money for initial funding. HTT/JumpStartFund A lot of the work is being done by 25 students in UCLA’s SUPRASTUDIO design and architecture program, which is partnered with JumpStartFund. The team uses a two-capsule system. There’s the swanky one, with fancy doors and windows, that pulls into the station. Passengers get in, and that capsule enters an outer shell as it’s loaded into the tube. So he said to himself, “there has to be a better way.” Turns out there is. Load yourself into an enormous shotgun shell and shoot yourself 400 miles across the state at 800 mph. It sounds crazy, but Musk swears it will work. And if he doesn’t build it, someone else will. How could it be that the home of Silicon Valley and JPL – doing incredible things like indexing all the world’s knowledge and putting rovers on Mars – would build a bullet train that is both one of the most expensive per mile and one of the slowest in the world? Note, I am hedging my statement slightly by saying “one of”. The head of the California high speed rail project called me to complain that it wasn’t the very slowest bullet train nor the very most expensive per mile. The underlying motive for a statewide mass transit system is a good one. It would be great to have an alternative to flying or driving, but obviously only if it is actually better than flying or driving.

If we are to make a massive investment in a new transportation system, then the return should by rights be equally massive. Unfortunately, none of these have panned out. Hyperloop.
