Big Risk: $1.2 Quadrillion Derivatives Market Dwarfs World GDP

It's complex, it's unregulated, and it ought to be of concern to world leaders that its notional value is 20 times the size of the world economy. But traders rule the roost -- and as much as risk managers and regulators might want to limit that risk, they lack the power or knowledge to do so. A quadrillion is a big number: 1,000 times a trillion. Yet according to one of the world's leading derivatives experts, Paul Wilmott, who holds a doctorate in applied mathematics from Oxford University (and whose speaking voice sounds eerily like John Lennon's), $1.2 quadrillion is the so-called notional value of the worldwide derivatives market.

To put that in perspective, the world's annual gross domestic product is between $50 trillion and $60 trillion. To understand the concept of "notional value," it's useful to have an example. Iraq’s Grim Reaper Gets Humanitarian Award

IRAQ ATROCITIES: Iraq:IT’S OFFICIAL - George W Bush is a war criminal. Documentary Photography by Alex Masi. **Detailed Information and Investigative Text Available** After almost a decade of war in Iraq, and a recent military disengagement by the USA, local doctors in the Sunni town of Fallujah, Al Anbar, are dealing with a mysterious spike in deformities and severe illnesses in children, following two violent US-led battles for the city in 2004.

Records at the general hospital indicate that around 15 per cent of newborns are presenting congenital defects. Parents in distress are questioning doctors for concrete explanations they are unable to provide. The average elsewhere in the world is believed to be between 2 and 4 per cent. According to a study carried out by Dr Chris Busby, professor at the University of Ulster, Belfast, a major mutagenic exposure must have occurred. Under suspicion are new modern portable systems. The UK government is presently facing a legal case at home, through 'Public Interest Lawyers', in Brighton, for its involvement in the second battle for Fallujah. IRAQ ATROCITIES: The U.S. Deliberately Destroyed Iraq's Water Supply So That The Iraqi Children May Die ALL 500.000 Of Them. "The United States knew the cost that civilian Iraqis, mostly children, would pay, and it went ahead anyway.”

IRAQ ATROCITIES: The U.S. Deliberately Destroyed Iraq's Water Supply So That The Iraqi Children May Die ALL 500.000 Of Them.

On May 12, 1996 some of the horrible consequences of this policy were revealed when the CBS news program 60 Minutes reported that roughly half million Iraqi children had died as a consequence of U.S. imposed sanctions. This led to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s infamous answer to the question, “is the price worth it?”

Her reply was yes “we think the price is worth it.” Albright later apologized, not for the murderous policy for which she was partially responsible, but rather for the fact that her answer to the above question had “aggravated our public relations problems” in the Middle East. As to domestic reaction, her comment “went unremarked in the U.S.” Representative Alan Grayson Investigates The Federal Reserve : Alan Grayson and Elizabeth Coleman. <div style="padding:5px; font-size:80%; width:300px; background-color:white; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; border:1px dashed gray;"> Internet Archive's<!

GovTrack.us: Tracking the U.S. Congress. Federal Reserve Inspector General hedges on trillions missing in Congressional hearing - National US Intelligence. The Inspector General of the Federal Reserve in the video below acknowledges that trillions of dollars cannot be accounted for. The astonishing five-minute clip is taken from a Congressional hearing where Federal Reserve Inspector General Elizabeth Coleman is questioned by Congressman Alan Grayson of Florida on May 6th about huge amounts of money for which the Federal Reserve is responsible. The Inspector General avoids answering almost every question asked by the Congressman.

In fact, she appears in this video clip to know less about the finances of the Federal Reserve than Congressman Grayson. Among the many important questions raised, Grayson requests information on the Bloomberg report that many trillion of dollars in credit have been extended by the Federal Reserve. When the Inspector General avoids answering, Grayson states, "If you're not responsible for investigating that, who is? " Watch this highly revealing five-minute video clip here: Analysis Methodology.
