Romano built an office building in his hometown as a green project, but his lender is more concerned about his commitment to another kind of green: paying its $6.9 million construction mortgage. The 33,000-square-foot Vive Verde, also known as EcoCentre, is the first South Florida project seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council to face foreclosure. In an interview, Romano said the extra cost of the building’s green features is not the reason it fell into foreclosure. “The fact that the building is a green building is not why the building financially is in trouble,” Romano said.
