What is “social networking”? Facebook was successful early on because it didn’t depart significantly from how its audience interacted, and because it started at the top of the social hierarchy. The site’s connection to collegiate social codes could be seen most clearly in its name, which, unlike that of every previous social network—Friendster and MySpace, but also SixDegrees, Bebo, Orkut, etc. By starting at Harvard, Facebook avoided another problem that had afflicted previous social networks: those with many friends had little reason to sign up. I previously worked for a start-up called, Passenger, where I was as a Community Manager for brands like Nike, JcPenney, and ABC. While at Passenger I posted to the company blog about the role of a Community Manager. Though the post remains mostly relevant, it does read much like an advertisement (ironic since at the time I clearly remember trying to ensure that it didn’t feel like an ad, but instead embraced the voice of the company, just as any Community Manager would do.)

I’ve included my post below, and have amended it slightly to reflect my current views, noted in purple. Please note, that this was written while working for Passenger, not Yahoo! , and does not necessarily reflect the views of the company at this time. Thought Leadership I spoke today with Jeremiah Owyang of Forrester Research about the role of the “Community Manager”, in an attempt to share some of the knowledge I’ve gained in my time at Passenger. This still remains a critical question. So let’s start there. Like this: Les 5 étapes d’une communauté. The cardinal sin of community management. Once you have a product launched, you will the face the joys – and the despair – of a community that grows up around it. I won’t sugar-coat this: it is one of the most difficult and frustrating aspects of building a company online.

There are many articles by many experts (myself included) extolling the virtues of listening to customers. In fact, there are so many of these propaganda pieces that this question might naturally cross your mind: if listening to customers is so great, why do we need so much propaganda? I’ll tell you the honest truth: listening to customers is gruesome, uncomfortable, and painful work.

Sure it has its moments, but then so does getting stranded on a desert island. Yet few products these days can succeed without their online community, and the insight you can gain from interacting with that community is unparalleled, despite the pain. This probably sounds illogical. Let me give an especially painful example.

We did not take this step lightly. Biznology: Do It Wrong Social Media. Thursday, I spent an hour answering questions from Chris Keiff and others on Twitter in my first-ever Twitter interview. I’d done interviews in chat rooms, but this was different, because I had to confine my answers to one or two 140-character tweets. With permission, I extracted the conversation and tried to thread it to make sense, along with some light editing to expand abbreviations and fix typos. I hope you’ll find it useful, too. The news media is experiencing a renaissance. As we end the year, its state in 2009 can be summarized as a year of turmoil, layoffs and cutbacks in an industry desperately seeking to reinvent its business model and content. But despite the thousands of journalism jobs lost, the future has much hope and opportunity for those that are willing to adapt to a changing industry. Much of that change is happening now.

And in the coming year, news organizations will look to approach monetization and content experimentation that is focused on looking at the web in a new way. News in 2010 will blur the lines between audience and creator more than ever in an era of social media. Below is a look at several trends in content distribution and presentation that we will likely see more of in 2010. 1. One of the difficulties of the web is being able to really track a story as it develops and creating engaging formats for long-form articles. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Next year’s news about the news: What we’ll be fighting about in. I’ve helped organize a lot of future of journalism conferences this year, and have done some research for a few policy-oriented “future of journalism” white papers. And let’s face it: as Alan Mutter told On the Media this weekend, we’re edging close to the point of extreme rehash.

This isn’t to say there won’t be more such confabs, or that I won’t be attending most of them; journalists (blue-collar and shoe-leather types that they are) may not realize that such “talking” is actually the lifeblood of academia, for better or worse. However, as 2009 winds down, I do think that it might be worthwhile to try to summarize a few of the things we’ve more or less figured out this year, and point towards a few of the newer topics I see looming on the horizon. In other words, maybe there are some new things we should be having conferences about in 2010. In the first section of this post, I summarize what I think we “kinda-sorta” learned over the past year. But first, here’s what we know. 1. 2. 3.
