I blame it on the craft fair that I signed up for at the last minute (with 2 weeks to get all of the supplies and make enough stuff to have a legitimate booth), but really, it’s because we have limited decorations (until they’re on clearance November 1st – so look out next year). However, I saw some ideas floating around the internet on how to use paint chips for art projects. I stopped in the paint section of our local Home Depot (while the hubby was ogling power tools and such), and picked out some Halloween-ish colors. As I was making them, I thought that this would be a fun project for preschool or elementary school students to work on their cutting and gluing.

Really, that’s all you need, no glue or extra bits of anything. These simple little hats can be decorated by kids at a party, or used to play party games. The bigger the plate or the smaller the child’s head, the bigger the brim on your hat is going to be. Below is a picture showing how to make the cuts for the shamrock hat ready for St. Patrick’s Day. Once you have the first cut made, you can then decide what you want your hat decoration to be. Next you can see the heart version of the hat. It works fine with just a colored paper plate. Or if you have plain white plates you could paint them. I really like the simple circle cut out on pastel colored plates and made to look like sweetheart candy with a marker pen. As you can see, these can be made to fit any head.

Here are the designs for the different hats. With a couple of extra folds and two staples you can make a spooky bat hat. Number shuffle. Make It: DIY Rainbow Sensory Box. Do you have a sensory box in your home yet?

Toddler Art — Groovy Peace Signs. While Emily was away with some friends enjoying a dip at the community pool, Clara and I had fun with this super-easy art project!

Toddler Art — Groovy Peace Signs

To make your own groovy peace signs, you will need paper plates, masking tape, and some paint (we used watercolors). I marked off a peace sign on the back of a paper plate, and let Clara have a go at it with the paints!! There’s really no wrong way to do this project. She needed very little encouragement from me to cover the plate with paint… so much fun!! Clara painted several of these, and each one is unique and colorful!
