Communities – SM Managers vs. Community Managers. Fight! | Philip Wride - Social Media Marketer and Community Manager. Following on from my post discussing some of the differences between Social Media and Communities in relation to listening and responding I think there’s a big difference between Social Media Managers and Community Managers. Often confused with being the same thing I think a line needs drawing in the sand and businesses to wake up and recognise the differences between them. The way I see it is simple; Social Media Managers are pretty much Channel Managers, Community Managers are People Managers. Community Managers are a step beyond a Social Media Manager as they are likely to deal with a greater number of people and requests across both owned and non-owned channels. A Social Media Manager will focus on owned channels and won’t be focusing on building relationships and engagement. Sure they’ll be creating and implementating strategy but I think there’s an additional level of understanding and appreciation that comes with being a CM.
