When I get Facebook messages and emails where people tell me they live vicariously through our adventures it used to always upset me. Our mission at The Adventure Couple is not to hear, “oh, I’m so jealous” or “I just sit here and live vicariously” it’s to hear these words: “I’ve become inspired to have more adventure in my life, to get off the couch and go after what I want and live my life with gusto!”

The dictionary’s definition of “vicarious” is: indirect, surrogate, substitute. Who wants to live a “substitute” life? You want to live your own life, right? Then, just the other day I was watching a video where world renowned kayaker Steve Fisher took Jackass star, Bam Margera, over a 100 foot waterfall in a tandem kayak. It dawned on me that perhaps there were multiple reasons why people live vicariously. 1. 2. 3. 4. All those are great reasons to enjoy vicarious living, as long as you don’t spend your whole life living vicariously and never step out to your own adventurous life. 1. 2.

Getting my chocolate and churros on in Madrid » Get off the beaten path. Chocolate and churros. Yum. Last week I was summoned to jury service. Over the two weeks I had a gun case and a drugs case. Pretty standard stuff. Nothing to blog home about. But the last case finished on the Thursday and we were told to go home and not worry about coming back, as they don’t hand out new cases on Fridays. Yippee! But now I had a decision to make. Twelve hours later, I was boarding a plane to Madrid with a backpack of essentials and a mischievous grin. I have no idea why I chose Madrid. So off I went to Madrid.

On my first night I went to bed at 8pm, got up at midnight and set out to Plaza del Sol – the place where all the parties happen. After getting some rip-off drinks in an empty, blue-lit bar, I told them I was going to the salsa club with or without them. It was a hell of a lot of fun. We danced (and the stag took pictures of his privates) all night long until morning. 9 Reasons Why It's Okay To Stay On The Beaten Path. There are some people who would have you believe that to be a “real” traveler, you have to avoid anything that a typical tourist might do. Travel blogs are quick to advise that you skip the Statue of Liberty in New York City or Big Ben in London for something with a little less exposure.

Sometimes I feel like my desire to drink a Hurricane at Pat O’Brien’s in New Orleans or explore Machu Picchu in Peru somehow is frowned upon as people try harder and harder to “get off the beaten path.” Well, I may not be a fanny pack toting American wandering around the world, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to visit Yosemite Valley when I should be in Tuolumne Meadows or checking out Mt. Rushmore when people tell me I should skip it for Crazy Horse. And while I’m all for slowing down and letting time and twisting roads take me wherever they desire, it’s not a crime to stand in line to check out the Louvre. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Inside My Head. Where Wonder Begins. Podcast: Play in new window | Download Laying alone under the stars in a field of grass, it’s easy to be in the moment.

To wonder over the beauty of it all. The smell of the air, and the taste of it. The sound of distant animals and human activity. The feel of the grass poking up through your socks. If you understand the culture in which you live, you can also appreciate how amazing it is that you can lay outside — unprotected — without fear of being mauled by a mountain lion or attacked by a fellow human.

Step back further and the moment becomes even more impressive. If you understand geology and astronomy and all the other sciences and studies that help us understand the massive but infinitely complex world that we live in and marvel over, each star becomes just one point in an amazing, utterly-detailed masterpiece. 2012 in Destinations « George On The Go. Compared to the culture count of 2011, 2012 was a bit of a wet haddock, but I did have a lot on my plate. While in 2011, I was deep into my year abroad, enjoying the luxuries of unlimited time and money, I have not seen those kinds of luxuries since. Between sitting my finals, preparing for job interviews and working full time, I still managed to fit in travel. If I can do it anyone can! 2012 Resolution : Visit 5 new countries January – Warwick Indeed, the year in general was off to a slow start. The only travelling I did was returning from my beloved Wales, back to my captor, Warwick University. February – Ireland I was half way through my final year of University, writing seemingly endless, pointless essays about the importance of Kafka. March – Hitchhike to Croatia The year really started to pick up pace here, when as soon as my second term came to an end, two friends and I hitchhiked across the continent.

April – Germany May – Finals June – Results, European Road Trip October – Japan. England. My Epic Quest. In the last five months, I have definitely received the most double takes of my life whenever I said that I had been learning all my Egyptian Arabic in Brazil. It’s just such an unlikely combination! Brazil has never had a huge or even tiny wave of Egyptian immigration. While there, I only managed to meet one single Egyptian in person in my entire 3 months. This was partially the reason I did it – to prove that even if there are no natives nearby, you can learn to speak the language entirely online. Then again, there are plenty of places that you can go that are not the country where your target language is official, but where you will find it surprisingly easy to practice… in person!

These communities and visitors can be much stronger than you think for particular languages, and actually worth serious consideration as a plan-B, if the country where that language is official is harder to visit or stay in longer due to prices, visa issues, climate etc. Japanese in Brazil German in Spain.
