Held Dear In U.S., Free Speech Perplexing Abroad

The French government announced Wednesday that it will prohibit demonstrations planned for Saturday to protest the anti-Muslim video that has sparked violence in Muslim countries around the world. The decision came after a French satirical magazine published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Most Americans consider freedom of expression universal and self-evident. University researchers develop blood test that accurately detects early stages of lung, breast cancer in humans

Researchers at Kansas State University have developed a simple blood test that can accurately detect the beginning stages of cancer. In less than an hour, the test can detect breast cancer and non-small cell lung cancer — the most common type of lung cancer — before symptoms like coughing and weight loss start. The researchers anticipate testing for the early stages of pancreatic cancer shortly. The test was developed by Stefan Bossmann, professor of chemistry, and Deryl Troyer, professor of anatomy and physiology. Both are also researchers affiliated with Kansas State University’s Johnson Cancer Research Center and the University of Kansas Cancer Center.

“We see this as the first step into a new arena of investigation that could eventually lead to improved early detection of human cancers,” Troyer said. The researchers say the test would be repeated a short time later. Read more at. Global Warming / Climate Change. Life Coaching: Martin Seligman on Positive Psychology at TED.

Analog computer

The Norden bombsight was a highly sophisticated optical/mechanical analog computer used by the United States Army Air Force during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War to aid the pilot of a bomber aircraft in dropping bombs accurately. Analog computers were widely used in scientific and industrial applications where digital computers of the time lacked sufficient performance. Analog computers can have a very wide range of complexity. Slide rules and nomographs are the simplest, while naval gunfire control computers and large hybrid digital/analog computers were among the most complicated.[1] Systems for process control and protective relays used analog computation to perform control and protective functions. Setup[edit] Setting up an analog computer required scale factors to be chosen, along with initial conditions—that is, starting values. Precursors[edit] Steampunk - Images.
