Solidarity Teach-Ins at a College Near You

Since Occupy Wall Street emerged on September 17, more than 1,200 related occupations have taken place coast to coast. In solidarity, Occupy Colleges was formed, focused on the need to engage students on their own turf: campuses. In the past three weeks, more than 10,000 students nationwide have walked out and protested in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street. Now, it is time for schools to do what they do best: Educate and learn! Starting November 2, schools across the nation will participate in teach-ins about Occupy Wall Street in hopes of continuing and extending the dialogue that was started by the Occupy Movement. http://www.thenation.com/blog/164248/solidarity-teach-ins-college-near-you

'It's Up To Us': Occupy Colleges Gains Traction

http://www.thenation.com/blog/164237/its-us-occupy-colleges-gains-traction One of the biggest myths about the Occupy College s movement, similar to misconceptions about Occupy Wall Street, is that there is a lack of focus. Occupy Colleges originated in the same way as its “mother” movement—spur of the moment, without a strong idea of what the future would look like, but with a sustained focus on problems that specifically affect colleges and universities across the nation, student debt being the most obvious example. In an attempt to gain both focus and traction, Occupy Colleges is staging National Solidarity Teach-ins on November 2nd and 3rd. The purpose in holding these teach-ins is to educate interested university community members about Occupy Wall Street, cultivate new ideas and possible solutions and ways to contribute, and effectively participate in steering the course of the largest social movement our generation has yet to see. The Occupy Colleges website provides resources for students to make organizing teach-ins not too arduous a task.

The class titles included "The Art of Protest Signs" and "Camera Techniques for Documenting Human Rights Abuses." They were held for free in the brick courtyard along Broadway at Seattle Central, near where demonstrators have been camping out since Saturday. The instructors conducted the classes on their own time.

Robbie Benson '15 The international Occupy Wall Street movement hit the College Tuesday night when posters advertising "Occupy Bowdoin" appeared in Smith Union. Robbie Benson '15 is the self-proclaimed "kid behind the posters," the driving force for a group that he hopes will heighten discussion about social class and socioeconomic inequality at the College. The signs bear phrases such as "PUT PEOPLE OVER PROFIT—Occupy Bowdoin: Join the Peaceful Revolution," and list occupybowdoin@gmail.com as a point of contact for more information. http://orient.bowdoin.edu/orient/article.php?date=2011-10-28&section=1&id=1

http://chatsworth.patch.com/articles/60-csun-demonstrators-march-on-banks-protesting-income-inequality Inspired by the Occupy movement , some students and faculty at Cal State Northridge held a Halloween trick-or-treat rally and march Monday from the quad to a pair of off-campus banks to protest income inequality. The demonstration began about 1 p.m. with an open forum on the lawn in front of Oviatt Library where only days ago some set up a short-lived Occupy CSUN tent encampment . The group of about 20 swelled to 60 and, eventually, marched to the Chase and Wells Fargo banks on the corner of Nordhoff Street and Reseda Boulevard. Graduate student Ankur Patel, who has been involved in protests on campus as well as the Occupy LA movement , acknowledged that the movement is disorganized and has not had a breakthrough. “We’ve been taking lots of baby steps but no real steps,” he said.

Three weeks ago Monday, Dan the Bagel Man was urging crowds of protesters to lock arms and resist an impending police raid on a small park across from Dewey Square. Last Friday, Dan’s distinctive military-style cap, covered in anti-war protest buttons, was still easy to pick out in Occupy Boston’s Tent City. But as the protest approaches its second month, the Bagel Man spends more of his time handing out food and washing dishes. Dan, whose nickname comes from his former job as a bagel vendor, is one of a few stalwart protesters that have stayed with Occupy Boston since the protest, inspired by demonstrations on Wall Street in New York City, began in Boston’s financial district. But as the protests continue and temperatures drop, many observers question where the Occupy movement is going. “Is this a moment or a movement?”

Faculty Comments on Occupy Boston Protests

About 20 students Sunday night launched “Occupy the Facts,” a nascent student organization hoping to combat charges that protestors in the Occupy movement are uninformed about public policy issues. The organization seeks to conduct important policy research and make their findings accessible to Occupy protesters and the public. The group will spend the next three weeks developing information packages. “I want to see if we [can] create something that could research public policy surrounding the occupiers’ demands,” said Peter D. Davis ’12, one of the project facilitators. “We want to be able to create fact sheets.”
