Utrecht neude 5. #OccupyData Hackathon | NEWMEDIA_ studies. Abstract: The OccupyData hackathon analyses tweets related to occupy. From Friday 9 to Sunday 11 teams in Boston, LA and Utrecht will analyse the use of Twitter by the Occupy movement and the representation of Occupy in the Twitter-Sphere.

NMDC students are interested in data analysis and visualization. Popular platforms such as Twitter generate large amounts of data that can be scraped from the Internet. At the latest Future of Entertainment Conference in Boston we met Sasha Costanza-Chock who is affiliated with MIT's Civic Media Lab. Sasha is completely into researching the Occupy movement as it unfolds. The upcoming 3-day hackathon is open for the general public. From Friday, December 9, 2011 through Sunday, December 11, 2011 teams around the globe will be working on analysing the data set.

As new media students we are interested in the ways new technologies are employed in organizing, communicating and framing socio-political issues. @RyanneTKD. Join a collective of developers, designers, researchers, artists, occupiers, and hackers to discover new ways of relating to the Occupy movement through analysis and visualization. Following the success of nationally-coordinated OccupyData Hackathons in November and March, a group of New-York-based Occupy Data hackers will be creating a space for for more days of planning, discussion and implementation.

The data sets from previous OccupyData and OccupyResearch events will be available, as well as some new results from an original (as-yet-unpublished) Occupy Wall Street survey. Occupy Data is a subgroup of Occupy Research, with the aim of analyzing and visualizing datasets related to the Occupy movement. At previous hackathons, teams of people worked on separate projects, with the goal of using free and open source tools to creatively present data pertinent to the Occupy movement and the issues it has raised. =================== “Open source: an apology”.

R-shief. "The People's Skype" And Occupy Wall Street Hackathons. Months after the first protesters arrived in Zuccotti Park, Occupy Wall Street continues to fuel tech innovation. Several weeks ago, #OWS sympathizers created a “People's Skype"; meanwhile, a hackathon held this weekend uncovered previously unknown parallels with the Arab Spring. These developments are just the latest in a string of new products and tools that have come out of the movement. J.R. Baldwin, a graduate student working on a MFA in Design and Technology at New York's Parsons The New School for Design, created an open-source product called the People's Skype. Baldwin calls the People's Skype a “phone-powered, distributed voice and voting system for the #Occupy movement,” and it's exactly what it sounds like.

The open-source software creates an impromptu conference call and televoting system for mobiles and landlines intentionally designed for use in mic checks at #Occupy gatherings. People's Skype users dial into a local phone number with a New York area code.
