How to Take Measurements. In order to knit a correctly fitted garment you will need the following measurements.

How to Take Measurements

Since most of the people who will use this tutorial live in the US, I am using the imperial system (measurements are given in inches). The easiest way to convert to metric is to use a tape measure with both inches and cms. Sometimes it is possible to find these with inches on one edge and cms on the other edge; these are easier to use. However, if you are only able to find one with inches on one side and cms on the other this will still work. Place the tape around your bust, just as you normally do. If you do not like to work with the above method, it is also possible to convert using a calculator. 1" equals 2.54 cms. 20. . * This measurement is used to check the front chest measurement. If there are any special fitting problems, measure and take note of them.

Worked with her sister Margaret to share this fantastic, step-by-step process for taking measurements: My sister Margaret is an avid knitter, but hasn’t ever sewed anything for herself. She wanted me to help her make a summer dress or two, so I helped her take her measurements, following the guidelines found here (brochure PDF) via Simplicity.com. Now that we have these measurements, we can determine what size pattern to buy. Margaret’s bust – waist – hip measurements are 35 – 29 – 38. Sewing Techniques, Tutorials, Lessons, Videos, Photos. Dress Making App. Amanda Kaufmann | Date posted: May 26th, 2011 As far as I can tell, I have just found the coolest app for the iPhone and iPod for the fashion sewer—a book on dressmaking for the beginning sewer.

Dress Making App

At $0.99, Dress Making: Beginners Guide to Making Your Own Dress offers great bang for the buck, particularly considering the longer app version for sale is $9.99 and any actual book would be even more expensive. (Don’t feel left out Kindle-users—Amazon sells the Kindle version of “Dress Making” for $0.99 too.) This condensed e-book has 12 chapters, each extraordinarily descriptive in a relatively short amount of text. For instance, the second chapter instructs the reader on measuring one’s self (including measurements that are less-often taken, like the side bodice and the shoulder length) and includes a measurement keeper chart.
