The Design of Eixample, Barcelona. In the late 1800s, the Eixample district of Barcelona went through a huge design overhaul. With visionary designer Ildefons Cerdà at the helm, the area was divided up into hundreds of octagonal blocks forming a grid design which allows for easy transport along the wide, bright streets.

The design was inspired by various schools of architecture, one of which was the Modernista architects, and allows inhabitants to benefit from extensive sunlight, improved ventilation and wide variety of green, public spaces. DNA sequenced of woman who lived to 115. 15 October 2011Last updated at 00:52 By Helen Briggs Health editor, BBC News website The woman had some rare genetic changes The entire DNA sequence of a woman who lived to 115 has been pieced together by scientists.

The woman, who was the oldest in the world at the time of her death, had the mind of someone decades younger and no signs of dementia, say Dutch experts. The study, reported at a scientific conference in Canada, suggests she had genes that protected against dementia. Further work could give clues to why some people are born with genes for a long life, says a UK scientist. It is more than 10 years since the first draft of the human genetic code was revealed.

Harvard Medical School’s Professor Clifford Woolf has proposed a radical way to combat drug abuse. He suggests using capsaicin to deter the abuse of certain extended-release drugs such as OxyContin and Ritalin. These morphine-based drugs, when taken as prescribed, release their opioids over time. But when crushed and snorted, swallowed or injected intravenously, they produce an intense high that is addictive. Woolf argues that adding capsaicin to the drug capsules is safe.

If the capsules are swallowed whole, as prescribed, the patient would suffer no ill effects from the added capsaicin. In an interview with the Harvard University Gazette, Woolf said "imagine snorting an extract of 50 jalapeno peppers and you get the idea. " To date, the professor’s proposal is still in the preliminary stages of development and the additive is yet to enter the production stage. Zorani New scientific experiments can be inspired by a simple question, and in the case of John Mercer, that question was, “So, John, do toning shoes work?” Dr. Mercer, a professor of biomechanics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, was talking with a friend who runs an athletic shoe store.

The friend told him that customers were coming in and requesting toning shoes, which are soft sneakers, often with a rocker-shaped sole, that promise to exercise and tighten muscles in the calves, thighs and buttocks. (“Your boobs will be jealous,” a refined advertising campaign for one of the shoes declared.) Many manufacturers make them: Reebok, New Balance, MBT, FitFlops and Crocs, among others. The store owner carried various models of the toning shoes. Dr. But as it turned out, according to results presented in June at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine, muscle activation and oxygen consumption were almost identical whether the women wore walking shoes or Shape-ups. James Galway - Wind Of Change CD Album. Cotton paper. Cotton paper is made from cotton linters or cotton from used cloths (rags) as the primary material source, hence the name rag paper.

Cotton paper is superior in both strength and durability to wood pulp-based paper, which may contain high concentrations of acids. Properties[edit] Certain cotton fibre paper is known to last hundreds of years without appreciable fading, discoloration, or deterioration,[1] so it is often used for important documents such as the archival copies of dissertations or theses. As a rule of thumb, for each percentage point of cotton fibre, a user may expect one year of resisting deterioration by use (the handling to which paper may be subjected).[2] Legal document paper typically contains 25% cotton. Cotton paper is typically graded as 25%, 50%, or 100% cotton. Uses[edit] Cotton paper is used in some countries' modern banknotes. Cotton bond paper can be found at most stores that sell stationery and other office products. History[edit] See also[edit] References[edit] Polymer.

Polymer notes carry benefits that you’ll appreciate as you make those basic transactions of everyday life. Secure Their leading-edge security features are easy to verify and hard to counterfeit. Durable They last at least 2.5 times longer than paper notes, reducing processing and replacement costs and environmental impact. Innovative The detailed metallic imagery carried in a transparent area of the notes makes for one-of-a-kind currency. Easy to Handle The new notes feel different from paper notes, but are just as simple to use. German Children's Book. Denial of pregnancy. Denial of pregnancy (also called pregnancy denial) is a rare form of denial exhibited by women to either the fact or the implications of their own pregnancy. One study found that women who denied their pregnancy represented 0.26% of all deliveries. [1] Psychotic denial[edit] This is a form of denial that is so extreme as to fall under the category of delusion.

While physical symptoms of pregnancy do usually occur they are sometimes misinterpreted by the woman. Some women interpret the sensation of something growing inside them as cancer, or a blood clot. Some women might believe fetal movements are their organs coming loose inside her body.[2] During the psychotic denial pregnancy women tend to hide their pregnancy from everyone and put their fetus at a high risk. Blood Simple, by Steven Leckart, is a great article in the recent issue (Dec 2010) of WIRED magazine, and is also available to read online.

Three visual designers were challenged to design a better lab report to help make health information more approachable and understandable by patients. …lab reports don’t have to be unintelligible. With some thought and design-minded thinking, tests can be as informative to patients as they are to physicians.

With a little context and color, we can make sense of the numbers. And with a bit more understanding, patients can become participants in their own health. These designs certainly aren’t perfect, but they very clearly illustrate the point that we should be able to help patients get a better grip around their own health information. The last few decades have seen a tremendous shift in pushing the responsibility of a patient’s health back onto the patient without giving them a better way to understand the information.

Photo Gallery: The Opera World’s Craziest Stages. When the idea for the first Bregenz Festival was tossed around almost seventy years ago, the Austrian city didn’t have the funds to build an opera house, so they constructed a makeshift stage against the city’s most beautiful natural setting — Lake Constance. The idea seemed wildly eccentric at the time, but the ingenuity paid off, and European audiences flocked to the floating stage each summer for the annual performances. This year the opera festival returns on July 20th with what promises to be a spectacular production of André Cheniér by Italian composer Umberto Giordano. With just over three months left before opening night, preparations are well underway to construct yet another elaborate set on Lake Constance, including a 50-foot head that was attached to a floating body by a crane.

Heart Curve. There are a number of mathematical curves that produced heart shapes, some of which are illustrated above. The first curve is a rotated cardioid (whose name means "heart-shaped") given by the polar equation The second is obtained by taking the cross section of the heart surface and relabeling the -coordinates as , giving the order-6 algebraic equation The third curve is given by the parametric equations where (H.

Each half of this heart curve is a portion of an algebraic curve of order 12, so the entire curve is a portion of an algebraic curve of order 24. A sixth heart curve can be defined parametrically as The areas of these hearts are can be given in closed form as a complicated combination of hypergeometric functions, inverse tangents, and gamma functions. The Bonne projection is a map projection that maps the surface of a sphere onto a heart-shaped region as illustrated above. Hilbert's problems. Hilbert's problems form a list of twenty-three problems in mathematics published by German mathematician David Hilbert in 1900.

The problems were all unsolved at the time, and several of them were very influential for 20th century mathematics. Hilbert presented ten of the problems (1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 13, 16, 19, 21 and 22) at the Paris conference of the International Congress of Mathematicians, speaking on August 8 in the Sorbonne. The complete list of 23 problems was published later, most notably in English translation in 1902 by Mary Frances Winston Newson in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society.[1] Nature and influence of the problems[edit] Hilbert's problems ranged greatly in topic and precision. Some of them are propounded precisely enough to enable a clear affirmative/negative answer, like the 3rd problem (probably the easiest for a nonspecialist to understand and also the first to be solved) or the notorious 8th problem (the Riemann hypothesis). Sometimes I don’t know what’s worse: robots with a face, or robots without one. Especially when it’s crawling towards you crying “ma-ma!” As it rises up to standing height on its spindly metallic legs. Researchers at Japan’s Hosoda Laboratory developed Pneuborn-7ll and Pneuborn-13, a pair of musculoskeletal infant robots. Their names come from the fact that they use pneumatic muscles as actuators (and in case you were wondering, they don’t actually say “ma-ma!” Pneuborn-7ll is the size of a 7-month old child, weighing in at 11.9 lbs and measuring 31 inches tall.

Pneuborn-13 is Pneuborn-7ll’s 13-month old older brother, designed so researchers can study the effect of bipedal walking on the musculoskeletal structure. Unfortunately, videos haven’t been posted of the duo in action yet, but we can expect them to be uploaded sometime soon.
