Mandarin has four distinct tones which are used to clarify the meaning of words. Proper use of the tones is essential for speaking and understanding the language. Tones should be practiced right from the beginning of your Mandarin study. When learning new vocabulary you must memorize the proper tone, otherwise the word is only half-learned. http://mandarin.about.com/od/educationlearning/a/fourtones.htm

Mandarin Tone Exercises - The Four Tones

Begin your study of Mandarin Chinese with the four tones. These are the cornerstones to good pronunciation, and once you have mastered them, everything else will fall in place. There are four Mandarin tones - high and level; rising; falling and rising; and falling. A syllable takes its meaning from both the sound and tone. For example, the syllable "ma" can mean "horse," "mother," "scold," or "hemp" depending on which tone is used. http://mandarin.about.com/od/educationlearning/tp/learn_by_step.htm
