Gesture Interfaces for Microinteractions in Domestic Spaces. iGNANT. The Memory Container by Weiche Wu seeks to analyze our body, which contains both physical and emotional experiences. Translating biological data into a readable language using two ordinary objects, a scale and a height chart. The Weight Recorder records the changing weight of a person over a period of time. The scales will eventually produce a graphic ‘life-tracing’ on a disk. The Height Recorder uses a common experience, featuring a doorframe as a height chart and leaving marks on it to show a child’s height, to record the specific memory. By using a long wooden stick hanging on the wall, the user can stand against the stick and draw a mark on it every year. After some years the stick can be cut into several pieces, according to the marks and reassembled into musical scales on a xylophone. Those scales are ordered by year, each scale represents an age of the user.

By 2015, six billion objects in the world will be connected to the internet. While it may seem tricky to grasp as a concept, the internet of things is nothing simpler, and more stunning, than objects being connected to the internet. At its most mind-blowing, these objects are learning and adapting to the behaviour of the user. The internet has well and truly left the computer and is running amok in ‘things’, showing us how previously inanimate, everyday objects can be bought to life through being connected .

We’ve seen prerequisite technology such as RFID tags, once used for fairly mundane tasks as tracking stock in a warehouse, be employed to enable the internet of things, and new technology emerge such as Arduino that takes this to the next level. Communicate with objects Nest is a great example of this. Now while this is clearly a bit of fun from Twitter, the use-cases here are wide reaching. In the Cloud. Samsung TecTiles Finally Come to Galaxy S4. Samsung's programmable TecTile technology is finally coming to the Galaxy S4. TecTiles are Samsung's near-field communications (NFC) stickers that be placed around the house or car, so you can automate certain tasks. Want to dim the lights and not get up from the couch? How about activate a media player from afar? All you'll need to do is to tap your Samsung smartphone against the sticker after it's programmed within the accompanying app and life will be much better.

TecTiles first launched last year, but the new Galaxy S4 smartphone comes with an updated NFC chip, which isn't compatible with the previous TecTile tags. Now, the company has rolled out TecTiles 2, which you can buy on Samsung.com. App Delivers 'Virtual Placebo' to Improve Your Health. Here's how it works: You begin the experience by choosing which lifestyle aspect you'd like to change — say, quitting smoking or decreasing stress — before scheduling an alarm-like reminder to "take it" each day. Then, you can personalize it further by choosing exactly what you'll be taking (it doesn't need to be a picture of a pill). The whole idea is to create a comfortable "happy place" to achieve the proper effect. With the right mindset, the group says, the act of routinely pressing buttons and watching your smartphone's screen will be equivalent to physically swallowing a sugar pill. Watch the video above to learn more. At time of writing, the group had raised almost $10,000 of its $50,000 goal, with 18 days remaining to donate. Would you give this a shot? The light on your nightstand gradually begins to brighten, your blinds unfold to welcome the morning light, coffee brews in the kitchen and music begins to play, all without you lifting a finger.

Until recently, even partially automated homes were exclusive to the domains of engineers and home owners wealthy enough to hire them (or creative students with some extra time on their hands). But now those systems are becoming more affordable and easier to manage, thanks in part to Kickstarter-fueled interest in "The Internet of Things," as well as integrations with SMS, smartphones and web-based applications like Twitter and Dropbox. We rounded up five objects to help smarten up your home. Photo courtesy of Lockitron.

How Social Media Will Make the Smart Energy Grid More Efficient. Chikodi Chima is a multimedia journalist and occasional globetrotter whose work has appeared in Fast Company, VentureBeat, GigaOm, Shareable, The Philadelphia Weekly and The New York Press. Based in San Francisco, he's currently working on The Future Journalism Project, a documentary about disruption of legacy media at the hands of emerging technologies. While Facebook may be the social media platform to beat, there’s an even more powerful social networking force that promises to be in all American homes one day. A growing number of startups are applying the principles of social networking to home energy management, and bringing social media to the smart grid. In the process, they are revolutionizing people’s understanding of their energy use, building successful companies and helping to lessen the impact of each individual on the environment.

What is The Smart Grid? The smart grid refers to the overlay of digital communications technology on our existing electrical infrastructure. Awesome Gadgets That We Should All Have - 28 Examples. One of the thought leaders in this category Julian Bleecker sums the topic up well in his essay "Design Fiction: A Short Essay on Design, Science, Fact and Fiction" with these words: "I proposed “design fiction” in order to think about how design can tell thoughtful, speculative stories through objects.........I decided on fiction not so much to create objects that are for storytelling, but to create objects that help think through matters-of-concern.

I am interested in working through materialized thought experiments. Design fictions are propositions for new, future things done as physical instantiations rather than future project plans done through PowerPoint. " "Smart, creative, imaginative ways of linking ideas to their materialization really do matter, because the future matters, and we will use whatever means possible to do create these better worlds, including the simultaneous deployment of science, fact, fiction and design. These are the extended notes from a talk I gave at #IoTlondon on January 2012. I have included some notes that didn’t make it to the final presentation due to time and format constraints. The purpose of this talk was for me to introduce the motivations and initial prototype of Hintsights, a startup company I have recently setup and will be developing in the coming months.

I will start my presentation giving you a quick overview of my interests in The Internet of Things (IoT). Then I want to talk to you about the motivations and execution of Hintsights a new startup in the IoT space I’m setting up. I’m a designer I’ve been professionally involved in interaction design for about 15 years. These past few years we have worked on a number of projects you would identify as being part of an Internet of Things. We are particularly interested in the development of tools to help people engage with information stemming from these networks, in buildings. Hintsights service Computers for places. Cooking up the connected kitchen. With all the attention given to home automation, you'd think that more products would be devoted to the "heart of the home.

" The kitchen probably has more gizmos-per-inch than any other room in the house. Yet most home connectivity efforts have left the kitchen connectivity on the back burner. That's in the process of changing – with some vendors, at least, turning the innovation heat up to High. The reasons are fairly obvious. The low-hanging fruit in home automation is products for security, environment, and cost savings. Fear of a break-in and budget concerns are strong emotions for homeowners. The year 2013 is going to be one marked by plenty of smartphone and tablet sales.

All cooking consists of a step-by-step process; a process that lends itself remarkably well to being transcribed as a set of directions. The dream of connected appliances is happening.
