Photo Credit: Hector Santizo Burning Man is a week-long annual event held in the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada, in the United States. The event starts on the Monday before the American Labor Day holiday, and ends on the holiday itself. It takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy on Saturday evening. Burning Man is organized by Black Rock City, LLC. The Photographer Hector Santizo has visited the Burning Man event and has agreed to share his wonderful pictures with us. Burning Man 2009, by Hector Santizo. Once a year, tens of thousands of participants gather in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. They depart one week later, having left no trace whatsoever. Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind. To truly understand this event, one must participate. Burning Man is also an ever-expanding year-round culture based on the Ten Principles (you can find them as captions under the first 10 pictures below).

There are no rules about how one must behave or express oneself at this event (save the rules that serve to protect the health, safety, and experience of the community at large); rather, it is up to each participant to decide how they will contribute and what they will give to this community. The event takes place on an ancient lakebed, known as the playa. Burning Man 2009, Lockman. UFO Houses, Ruins of the Future, now just a memory [30 Pics. UFO Houses: Orange Sanzhi Pod City – abandoned two years after it was begun, it lay abandoned for 28 years before finally being torn down. Up until that time, it was known as the mysterious “ruins of the future”. Photo Credit: Cypherone The weird and wonderful Sanzhi Pod City, or UFO houses (on account of their flying saucer-like shape), was an abandoned resort complex in Taiwan. Pod City was marketed as a holiday resort for U.S. military personnel posted to East Asia.

The original idea for the UFOs came from Sanjhih Township plastics manufacturer Yu-chou Co. Unfortunately his company went bankrupt in 1980 and the project work was stopped. Ultimately the buildings were scheduled to be torn down in late 2008, despite an petitions to retain one of the structures as a museum. Incredible Space Pics from ISS by NASA astronaut Wheelock. Go Discovery! It was October 23, 2007 at 11:40am EST when I had my first ride to space on Discovery. She’s beautiful… just sad that this will be her last voyage. Looking forward to climbing aboard the flight deck when Discovery arrives at the Space Station in November. (9-23-2010). Incredible Photos from Space: Larry Tanner, NASA. Special thanks: Bethbeck’s blog On September 22, 2010, with the departure of the Expedition 23 crew, Colonel Douglas H. Wheelock assumed command of the International Space Station and the Expedition 25 crew.

We thought that we should put some of the space photos together as a tribute to him and the whole ISS crew. The following space photos are all visible on Astro_Wheels’ twitpic account, and we are eternally grateful to him for sharing these space photos with the world. Cosmonauts are the Russian equivalent to Astronauts and this Russian Hero has been in space not once or twice but three times. In 2002 he flew on the Shuttle STS-112, and he later, twice went on the ISS in 2007 and finally in 2010. During his 2010 stay he was ISS-24 flight engineer under Astronaut Douglas Wheelock whom we have features on Triggerpit a year ago. Triggerpit staff: “The golden horizon we call this one.

Space Shuttle Discovery - Getting ready for its final mission. Space Shuttle Discovery being moved to launchpad at nightCAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Bathed in bright xenon lights, space shuttle Discovery makes its nighttime trek, known as “rollout,” from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It will take the shuttle, attached to its external fuel tank, twin solid rocket boosters and mobile launcher platform, about six hours to complete the move atop a crawler-transporter. Rollout sets the stage for Discovery’s STS-133 crew to practice countdown and launch procedures during the Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test in mid-October.

Targeted to liftoff Nov. 1, Discovery will take the Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM) packed with supplies and critical spare parts, as well as Robonaut 2 (R2) to the International Space Station. 09/20/2010 Earth Art Photo: NASA/Jim Grossman STS-133: Final Flight of DiscoveryWorkhorse, ambassador, scientist and equal opportunity emissary. 6/14/2010NASA/Jack Pfaller. Time to order a large drink, you know, one with a lot of fruit and a little umbrella, then stretch out on a hammock and just enjoy life, watching what I can only imagine a marvelous sunset. Image Credit: NASA/ESA, Russian Federal Space Agency, Maxim Suraeva and Oleg Kotov I for one am very pleased that the astronauts on the ISS (heroes in my humble opinion) keep sharing images of our beautiful planet with the rest of us. The privilege of viewing earth from space is only granted to a very select few. However, thanks to these images, it is almost like we get to go up there ourselves. For that I am truly grateful to the Astronauts, NASA and ESA. The real kick is, we’ve seen images like this before, created in special effect studios in Hollywood. . The following photos of Planet Mars shatters the idea of an all “red” planet. Mars also has many many hidden, very colorful treasures. The landscape shown is like a post apocalyptic Earth. Or perhaps more what our own planet would look like if we removed almost all life. Nevertheless the Mars landscape is breathtaking and make me daydream of what it would be to build a new civilisation on Mars – starting from scratch. That would be something… HiRISE is the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). Dunes or ripples surround the mesa. Dunes in Russell Crater. Mind-blowing artistic rendering of Mars. The outstanding digital rendering techniques of the Dutchman Kees Veenenbos have been featured in National Geographic and on NASA pages . The images he rendered are made with a landscape program called Terragen. He has worked with this program already since 1999 in different versions. Most are made with digital elevation models of NASA, from different satellites like the Mars Global Surveyor for example. He made a lot of images for National Geographic, Mars images, but also of good old Earth and other planets in the solar system and even extra solar planets.

We have put together a collection of his fantastic made images of recent and ancient Mars (with water and ice). All artwork are copyright Kees Veenenbos and we have been give special permission to use them for this article. Earth Art: Islandic Tiger – The Eyjafjorour Fjord, Iceland This stretch of Iceland’s northern coast resembles a tiger’s head complete with stripes of orange, black, and white. The tiger’s mouth is the great Eyjafjorour, a deep fjord that juts into the mainland between steep mountains. The name means “island fjord,” derived from the tiny, tear-shaped Hrisey Island near its mouth.

The ice-free port city of Akureyri lies near the fjord’s narrow tip, and is Iceland’s second largest population center after the capital, Reykjavik. Comet Lovejoy seen from the ISS [8 pics. Comet Lovejoy and Chile at Night (ISS 12/26/11) This busy night time panorama was photographed by one of the Expedition 30 crew members from the International Space Station on Dec. 26, 2011. Comet Lovejoy streaks through the star-filled sky just to the right of center. The land mass is the coast of Chile, looking southeast, with several coastal cities in the capital city region near Santiago.

A 28-mm focal length was used to record the image. Photo Credit: NASA As Comet Lovejoy was visible from Earth during the Christmas holiday it became known as “The Great Christmas Comet of 2011″, and because its appearance was announced on the 16th anniversary of the SOHO satellite’s launch it was also nicknamed “The Great Birthday Comet of 2011″. Comet Lovejoy is a periodic comet, classified as a Kreutz Sungrazer.
