Altair 8800 Computer, Altair 32 Emulator, Altair Front Panel Computer history, Old Computers
In 1999, I (Rich Cini) downloaded a copy of a MITS Altair emulator program written for the Windows platform by Claus Giloi. Claus, a programmer working for Microsoft, wrote a 16-bit Windows-based "emulator" for the Altair and IMSAI 8080-based computers as a desktop toy more than a usable emulation. By 2000, Claus' Web site had disappeared (although you still can find copies of the original executables on the Web, including on this site. The machine, like it's predecessor, became popular over the channel in France. The French models incorporated a scart power supply which tidied up the Oric cable problem that I am sure Oric users will remember (a cable for the machine, one for the cassette deck, one for the TV and one for any other peripherals that may be attached!). Phew. The Oric Atmos was a decent machine that never really managed to take off in the UK. It lived through 1984 and 1985 before fading into obscurity as it lost out to the Commodore 64 , ZX Spectrum .

The Oric Atmos was a British designed and built machine and was the successor to the Oric 1. Oric International to released the Oric Atmos, which added a true keyboard and an updated V1.1 ROM to the Oric-1. Soon after the Atmos was released, the modem, printer and 3-inch floppy disk drive originally promised for the Oric-1 were announced and released by the end of 1984.

Side B holds the ALC program (Automatic Level Control), described on the inlay. I suppose it corrects the loading routines, preventing the computer to detect errors before the program actually started loading (bug corrected in later Atmos ROMs).Although it looks like an unimpessive keyboard-like box, the Commodore 64 was incredibly popular. More C64s have been sold than any other single computer system, even to this day. That's about 17 million systems, according to the Commodore 1993 Annual Report. In a 1989 interview , Sam Tramiel, then-president of Commodore, said that "When I was at Commodore we were building 400,000 C64s a month for a couple of years." The C64 looks nearly identical to the Commodore VIC-20 , released in 1981.

Commodore USA's custom Linux distribution, called Commodore OS Vision, comes pre-installed on the C64x which will allow you to play all your favorite 8-bit era Commodore games with a single click. It even has the option to boot right into the original C64's full screen READY prompt (left), where you can also launch classic games. Commodore OS Vision also allows you to boot straight into the included XMBC Media Center allowing you to use the C64x as a home theater system.
