Foto. Animal Planet : Pets, Wild Animals, Dog Breeds, Cat Breeds.
Border collie takes record for biggest vocabulary - life - 22 December 2010. Video: Dog with the biggest vocabulary IN THE age-old war between cats and dogs, canines might just have struck the killer blow. A border collie called Chaser has been taught the names of 1022 items - more than any other animal. She can also categorise them according to function and shape, something children learn to do around the age of 3. Chaser follows in the footsteps of Rico, who trained at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. Rico had a "vocabulary" of 200 words and could identify new objects in a group of familiar objects by a process of elimination, according to a study published in 2004. To find out whether there was a limit to the number of words a border collie could learn, psychologists Alliston Reid and John Pilley of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, started an intensive training programme with Chaser.
The team regularly tested Chaser on her entire vocabulary. More From New Scientist Promoted Stories Recommended by. Kakapo Recovery Programme. The Unnatural History of the Kakapo. "A highly entertaining story with heart in the mouth suspense, setbacks, heroic ingenuity, and perseverance above and beyond. " - Helen Wong, NZ Listener. This is a story about a family living with a terrible curse. Adults are plagued by infertility and the young are vulnerable to disease.
But this family is no stranger to adversity; they are a family of kakapo. Once thought extinct, they’re now the world's rarest and strangest wild parrot. Today there's only one breeding population left in the entire world and the normally guarded conservation project that protects it has opened its doors and given a documentary maker unprecedented access to the Kakapo Recovery Program.
The timing is perfect, modern science thinks they've uncovered the reason behind the curse and the recovery team think they've found a way to lift it. With the help of a Spanish avian artificial insemination expert, some old men and a team of dedicated conservationists and rangers, a cure is almost within reach. Rare Bird Humps Photographer's Head. Legendary Parrot Who Saved His Species Dead at 80.
Photo via AKO AOTEAROA Richard Henry may sound like an oddly dignified name for a bird -- but its bearer deserves nothing less. Richard was a highly-endangered Kakapo, a flightless parrot from New Zealand, who is credited by many with single-wingedly saving his species. In the 1970s, researchers believed that the Kakapo had been nearly wiped out and that extinction was inevitable -- that is, until they ran across Richard. With his genetic material, conservationists were able to slowly recover the species. Even early on, scientists at the time noticed that the bird numbers were in decline -- due mainly to the factors described above, but also because they were a curiosity among foreign biologists and animal collectors, though the species didn't fair well in captivity.
By the 1890s, it was clear that lest some action be taken to protect them, the kakapo would soon go the way of that other flightless bird, the dodo. Mike. I have heard several people asking about how to get a bird out of the cage initially just to get to the point of target training and trick training. I do realize that this is a major issue for a first time bird owner. I had gone through this myself when I got my first bird and it must have been a week or two since owning it till I took it out for the first time.
This article is for all those people at the very early stages of bird ownership that want to know how to get the bird out of the cage for the first time so they can begin to interact with it and train it. Budgie stepping up to come out of cage Now before I get further into this, I want to say that this is merely my personal opinion based on personal experience. Basically there are 3 things that the bird could do if you reach your hand into its cage: 1) Run away (flapping, crashing into cage walls, running, etc) 2) Bite (ouch, blood, pain) 3) Step onto your hand If bird is a stepper, just proceed with taming and training. This is a work in progress, stay tuned for photos and movies. A free flighted Senegal parrot acted as winged ambassador and introduced me to the Poicephalus family. Prior to meeting him, the only thing I understood about these green little birds with ‘different heads’ was that they made ‘good apartment pets’. I lived in a house, so that wasn’t much of an endorsement.
This fellow caught my attention. He was part of a free flighted parrot show. That day, I made a mental note that my next bird would be a Senegal and that I would not trim the wings. Poicephalus means “different head” in Greek and these birds are characterized by a grey head and a green body.
