Exercises for Fiction Writers - Page 2. Handwriting tips. You’ve decided you want to improve your handwriting and you’re probably hoping a fountain pen will do the trick -- maybe a friend told you it would. Maybe you’re just adventurous and you want to try your hand at calligraphy (or you might, once your handwriting improves).

Good for you! A fountain pen may make your writing look a bit better, but if your writing looks as if frenzied chickens got loose on the page, chances are this won’t be enough. Hemingway never wrote a treatise on the art of writing fiction. He did, however, leave behind a great many passages in letters, articles and books with opinions and advice on writing. Some of the best of those were assembled in 1984 by Larry W. 1: To get started, write one true sentence. Hemingway had a simple trick for overcoming writer's block. Sometimes when I was starting a new story and I could not get it going, I would sit in front of the fire and squeeze the peel of the little oranges into the edge of the flame and watch the sputter of blue that they made. 2: Always stop for the day while you still know what will happen next. 5: Don't describe an emotion--make it.

CALLIHOO Writing Idea Generators: Cosmic Thoughts. I found this little JavaScript at The JavaScript Source. I thought the odd juxtapositions of ideas made a good idea generator. Often when you bump two very different ideas against one another, the resulting spark makes a pretty good story idea. If one of those phrases (or the combination thereof) didn't start any creative juices flowing, add some from one or more of the other idea generators.
