Paint Moss Graffiti - Step-by-Step Guides for Offbeat DIY Projects. How to Plant Raspberry Plants From Seeds. The Chapin Bucket Irrigation Kit - 1 February 1996. Sold to missionary and other humanitarian groups at the subsidized cost of $US7 each, the Chapin Bucket Irrigation Kit (families supply their own buckets) appears to be a major, effective new tool for enabling the poor of the world to help feed themselves.
The buckets are mounted on posts 3' (1m) high which provides the water pressure for the gravity flow irrigation. Each Chapin Kit consists of fittings and sufficient irrigation tape to irrigate two 50' (16m) rows of vegetables by filling the bucket 1-2X's daily. These Chapin Kits are already in use in more than 70 countries, and their popularity is steadily growing. [The reason for this popularity is basically threefold: a.) the kits work well, b.) the technology is very simple, and c.) it is affordable (even in many poor parts of the Third World).] No. 1 Parts for kit; male adapter, rubber washer, female adapter, filter screen, 2 barb fittings, 2 end closers, 2 supply tubes, and drip line for two 15 meter lengths.

Well, it's too late for this season—at least in Central Maine—but there's still time to prepare and plan a very different way to grow potatoes next season. Early this Spring (2000), I ordered my Dark Red Norland potatoes from Johnny's and decided I'd had enough of rows and rows of spuds taking up most of the prime space in our veggie patch. So....I borrowed a concept from a distant friend, highly refined it, and now grow them vertically! The up-side: where 5 pounds of spud "seed" formerly planted about 40 feet of row, now the same plants occupy a circular space 2-1/2 feet across by 36" tall.
Www.gb0063551.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/seeog/companion/ 17 Apart: Growing Celery Indoors: Never Buy Celery Again. Remember when we tested and shared how to grow onions indefinitely last week?
Well, at the same time, we've been testing out another little indoor gardening project first gleaned from Pinterest that we're excited to share the successes of today — regrowing celery from it's base. We've figured out how to literally re-grow organic celery from the base of the bunch we bought from the store a couple weeks ago. I swear, we must have been living under a rock all these years or just not be that resourceful when it comes to food, but we're having more fun learning all these new little tips and tricks as we dive deeper into trying to grow more of our own food. This project is almost as simple as the onion growing project — simply chop the celery stalks from the base of the celery you bought from the store and use as you normally would.
How to build a hot bed out of recycled glass bottles. Earlier this year I designed a wine bottle bed for the 2010 Northwest Flower and Garden Show display we created in partnership with Seattle Tilth.
After the garden show I moved it into a spot in our garden and grew our very first RIPE pepper, before any of our tomatoes ripened!!! Ripe pepper in a wine bottle bed The idea is simple: the sunlight warms up the air inside the glass and expands. The heated air is pushed through the bottle neck into the soil warming it, and the plant growing in the soil. Because of the limited size of the garden show display we made it small and in a circle large enough for one plant.

Grow Your Own Super Fruit: The Pomegranate. By Mindy McIntosh-Shetter This year I have made a commitment to be more hyper-local in my food choices.
I have decided not to eat anything out of season that I have not canned or frozen and I will not eat anything exotic that I have not grown myself. But when I made this personal commitment I did not think about one of my favorite fruits and that is the pomegranate. Pomegranates are not that difficult to grow and actual do well indoors since they are self-pollinating. They can be started from seed or cuttings without much trouble and require only the basic equipment needed for any type of plant. They can even tolerate a few nights of below 32 F degrees but it is always a good idea to move indoor when the temperatures dip into the low 40s F degrees.

Gardeners traditionally dig, or turn over the top layer of soil before planting to get rid of weeds, and make it easier to use fertilizers and to plant crops. This also speeds up the decomposition of crop residue, weeds and other organic matter. Tilling the soil is often the most strenuous of a gardener’s tasks. A complex, symbiotic relationship exists between the soil surface and the underlying micro-organisms, however, which contributes to a natural, healthy soil structure. Digging into the bed can interfere with this process and disturb the natural growing environment. Vermicompost Right in Your Garden - Make a Worm Bucket.
