Horizontal Trees. EARTHSHIP HOMES: A blueprint for the green life | The Mindful Word. They say home is where the heart is, but let’s face it, from an environmental perspective, home is where the waste is. Indeed, there’s something terribly wrong with the way we build our homes, not to mention the types of homes in which we choose to live. The amount of materials that go into building a typical single-family home is truly mind-boggling. And this is overshadowed only by the amount of energy a typical home consumes over its lifetime. The typical North American detached single-family dwelling consumes roughly 10,700 kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity annually. Since the 1960s, U.S. homes have been steadily growing in size, increasing the amount of space that needs to be heated and cooled.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the conventional housing model is fundamentally flawed and unsustainable. One can easily imagine the limitations, dependency, and vulnerability of being on life support in a hospital. Earthship Biotecture Thermal mass and passive-solar design. At Seattle Fish Company, we understand that the success of our business depends upon the health of the environment.

So, although we are longtime supporters of sustainable fishing principles, we are now working to become leaders in sustainable business practices, too. With the formation of the SFC Green Team, Seattle Fish Company has opened a powerful new forum for innovative ideas and initiatives—both within our enterprise and around the world. Seattle Fish Company is proud to be the only seafood wholesaler in Colorado with certification from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), an eco-labeling organization designed to ensure that seafood is traced back to a sustainable fishery. Our affiliation with industry thought leaders such as MSC has led to smart shifts in purchasing, including becoming experts on the specific fisheries and the formation of partnerships intended to provide customers with more sustainable options. Our efforts have produced some very powerful results. SeaPact.org. Sustainability | Colorado. COSEIA is the award-winning nonprofit association leading Colorado's solar industry since 1989.

Energy Office. Transportation Transportation fuels are a major component of Colorado’s energy portfolio accounting for 30% of all energy use, the largest of any sector in the state. Colorado is in a position to become a key producer and beneficiary in the emerging alternative-fuels economy. We have abundant resources that have great potential as domestic sources for transportation fuels. Diversifying the state’s transportation fuels portfolio will be a key priority for the Colorado Energy Office as it seeks to promote its mission of enhancing energy security, promoting environmental stewardship, creating Colorado jobs, and providing low costs to consumers.

Energy Efficiency Reducing energy costs for consumers is a key component to the CEO’s mission and vision. Community Supported Agriculture. Thinking about signing up for a CSA but want to learn more about the idea before you commit? Read on. For over 25 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. This arrangement creates several rewards for both the farmer and the consumer. Advantages for farmers: Get to spend time marketing the food early in the year, before their 16 hour days in the field begin Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm's cash flow Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow Advantages for consumers: It's a simple enough idea, but its impact has been profound.

Variations As you might expect with such a successful model, farmers have begun to introduce variations. CSAs aren't confined to produce.
